Tommy and Mike were making their bones in this league when David Alridge was learning his abc's and wetting his bed.

I'd like to see how informed Alridge is when he's as old as they are. He'll be in a retirement home in Boca arguing with other seniors saying..."turn up the tv.  I want to see Mike and Tommy call the Celts game. I know they're a little misinformed but....wait...what was I saying?"

I stopped reading anything David Thorpe has to say about 2 years ago.  As others have stated, he reps his own guys very hard, and that's who he knows about.  Everything else is a generic, VERY brief comment that anyone can make.  I have no idea why this guy gets his own chat, I'm even more clueless why people still read them and take what he says seriously.

Gotta agree. Celtics and Spurs are both pretty bad. Tommy is one of the most unpleasant to listen to in the league when he starts screaming. Spurs have homerism issues too, though they don't make ears bleed.

Tommy is a bit of a broken record in commentary, but I'm not sure many local color guys are that up to date anyway.

There is a difference between being uninformed and being a homer, no? No sane person who knows basketball can accuse Mike or Tommy or being uninformed.

I would personally guarantee that any one of the authors on Celticsblog knows more about individual NBA players not on the Celtics than Tommy.

You sound like a CB homer now :P

But seriously, I don't care how much Tommy knows about Ersan Ilyasova or any other player. He knows the Celtics club like the back of his hand...he knows what's going on on the court...and has plenty of knowledge on offensive and defensive systems...in short, he knows all there is to know about the game of basketball itself.

He is very biased towards Celtics...but I don't see anything wrong with it...and I don't see anything wrong with someone calling him a homer...but uninformed..he is not.

No one has a problem with him providing the Heat broadcasters as an example of good broadcasting?

Well, like I said in the part of the quote you x'd out:

But, I'd also personally guarantee Tommy knows more about the game of basketball and the Celtics as an organization than any one of the authors. In that regard, which is the regard that counts, Tommy is a freakin savant.

That's because this part...

....of the post wasn't directed at you. I was just addressing the "uninformed" label in general.

I find it humorous for a guy employed by ESPN to say a former Coach of the Year is uninformed? In what sense? He may not be up to snuff with every draft pick or whoever, but he knows basketball. He can look at a player and within minutes know what kinda game he has.

Bottom line, I'd take a person like Tommy who has forgotten more basketball than "informed" guys like Thorpe and Hollinger.

And Mike is not only informed, but barely even a homer.

I watch the C's on the league pass and watching the C's broadcast brings another dimension to the game, it's simply more entertaining.

I am a lifelong Celtics fan who honestly does not enjoy listening to Tommy. I love the guy, but his endless complaining about the officiating nauseates me. Half the time or more the officials have made the right call, but Tommy's bias does not allow him to see that. I actually love the stories he tells, his rapport with Mike, and most of the other stuff he does, but the constant criticism of the officiating is annoying.
For the record, has anyone heard Tommy "endlessly complain" about the refs when they're not doing a horrible and inconsistent job?  I've heard him compliment them when they're calling it fair and making good calls.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Yes, I have heard him yet and whine about good calls.

He does not have a good eye for catching bad calls. He has a good eye for catching calls against the Celtics, good or bad. He is also typically oblivious to bad calls in favor of the Celtics, unlike the Lakers' announcer who I respect for his ability to acknowledge when his team got a freebie.

He's not talking about whether Tommy ever misses a call, more when he complains about the refs when they aren't making any bad calls at all.

By the way, while Tommy does complain about the officials a lot, much of it is just Mike and Tommy's shtick. He'll feign outrage and they'll chuckle about it. Not all of it is "Johnny Most".

NBA refs has more credibility issues than any other refs I think.   Some games they are flat out horrible, the NBA claims to grade them but there is no way they could and keep some of these bums unless it was part of their schick.

I agree perplexing to the say the least but, it is ESPN where the term ' EXPERT ' is used for someone like Bill Simmons and John Hollinger.

Obviously he's not gonna make a big deal about the Celtics getting a bad call because most people watching the game don't want to hear it.  He's typically just silent but from time to time I've heard him and Mike say "we got away with that one."

Did you hear that last night David Aldridge broke the story that after two years people in Seattle still haven't given up hope of getting an nba franchise! He's so well informed!  :o

Never heard of thorpe - but anyone who likes the Heat announcers (Eric reed and Tony Fiorentino) - last night's game a perfect example with repeatedly bringing up what a "hardship" it was for the Heat to play their 1st home game after a "long road trip" - has no taste. Eric continuously pronounced Belinelli's name as "Belly Nelly", and the signature "kaboom" when a Heat player hits a jumper is just dumb. "Coach Tony" is the poster child for pointing out the obvious...

And Bill Land of the Spurs?

Ouch.
