So, this chat with David Thorpe from Tuesday annoyed me because of what he said about Mike and Tommy.  Here's the portion of the chat that's relevant:

John (Houston)

Follow up to the Heat announcer being your favorite, which other local crews are in your top 5?
David Thorpe  (12:47 PM)

I liked the guys from Memphis, folksy but fun and smart. Did they change color guys? Lakers crew always so professional. Utah's too. Magic guys are very good too.
David Thorpe  (12:48 PM)

Oh, and the guys from Minny are improving and actually pretty good.

kshiz (Chicago)

Please say Tommy Points!!!
David Thorpe  (12:50 PM)

Ugh. Homer points is more like it. Celts and Spurs have terrific organizations, but their tv guys are not remotely objective or particularly informed.

Thoughts?

I can see Tommy being grouped as biased, but Mike Gorman? He is easily one of the best play by play guys in the league...of course he roots for the Celtics, but he's still informative and objective when he needs to be.

I think people's perspective on Celtics broadcasters are because of Heinsohn (although I love him) and his homerism so that reflects onto Mike.

he also seems to miss the fact that it's a local market.

If i wanted sterile, "we never criticize anyone or anything because it's mean" commentary I'd watch Miller and albert games.

National games, much like the NFL are boring because everyone and everything is a great play, or a great call, or a great throw because they don't want to offend anyone. It leads to bland, boring calls. **

If im watching MY team i want my announcers to talk about my teams and players. I don't care about the other sides guys, they arent on my team.

** exception made in NBA for the SVG-Jackson team, because since JVG know he could be a head coach tomorrow he seems to call it like it is and actually evaluate guys. Same for hubie.

Yup Tommy, who won rings as a coach and as a player is less informed than the Thorpedo. Makes perfect sense.

Where does Tommy rank as far as coaches and players with rings?
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Completely agree.  He would probably say remdawg isnt informed.  Listen, Mike and Tommy are homers sure, but you learn more as an announcer when you travel with the team.  Nobody can speak more to the celtics team and organization than Mike and Tommy who are with the guys every day.

True for the most part... just don't get him started on Carmelo Anthony.  He doesn't like Melo at all, ****.

Why would someone listen to a personal trainer chat about basketball?

I've been thinking the same thing. Why do people value this guy's opinion so much that he gets a chat? There's gotta be a gazillion better guys that would be more informed and/or entertaining.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
David Thorpe is my least favorite ESPN guy. he constantly pimps the guys he trains, and he is about as informed on the guys he doesn't as Tommy is on guys who don't play for the Celtics.

Gotta agree. Celtics and Spurs are both pretty bad. Tommy is one of the most unpleasant to listen to in the league when he starts screaming. Spurs have homerism issues too, though they don't make ears bleed.

Tommy is a bit of a broken record in commentary, but I'm not sure many local color guys are that up to date anyway.

Also exactly what I was thinking.

I guess he wants the tv guys to be robots that add very little like him.

Tommy may not be informed about what ad Lebron's nike people are going to come up with or what club Boozer went to last night or what lawyer Melo hired to help him not snitch, but the reason is that HE DOESN'T CARE AND NEITHER DO WE.

Can you imagine if Phil Jackson became a tv guy, spouted his opinion and was a big Laker guy? Who'd call him uninformed? Same exact thing
