If I had to pick an MVP candidate to represent the Celtics I'd pick KG. When you take him off the court there is an enormous dropoff. Rondo's production is in many ways a product of who he is playing with, but KG has been very productive on his own, rebounding, superb defense, and above all the leader on the team.
As the season goes along I bet Dirk drops down in the MVP voting.
When you talk about Rondo's production being a product of who he is playing with, that works both ways. 84% of KG's baskets are assisted, compared with 68% in 07-08 or 60% in his last year in Minny.
I wasn't really talking about shooting, though I suppose that factors in. KG's production goes way beyond scoring, and he has looked spectacular in every way this season. He's also been healthier than Rondo this season!
Quite frankly KG has been our best player this year, and I think he should at least be in the discussion for MVP.
Without those easy baskets, though, he wouldn't be in any MVP mix. He's been our best player since Rondo's been hurting, but he wasn't before then. Rondo's also playing great defense, and his leadership on offense isn't that different than KG's on the other end.
And without 4 future hall of famers on the court with Rondo, along with a tremendous coaching staff, Rondo wouldn't be getting nearly as many assists. It goes both ways, but I think Rondo benefits more.
All I'm saying is that KG to me has been the MVP of the Celtics this season, and should be considered for MVP of the league at some point.
