I don't think that the starting job will automatically be there for Perk. Shaq has earned the starting job with his play thus far. Also, Perk is going to be rusty. The best thing to do is to ease Perk back off the bench. What's the harm in that?

You're right in all that, but don't be surprised either if Perkins miraculously gets the start while Shaq sits out 5 games or so with a "nagging injury".

Why should Perk start when he's clearly an inferior player? Shaq is just a better basketball player than Perk, even at 38.

I can't see Shaq doing a better job than Perk on D12 or Bynum, but we will see soon enough.

Bynum shoots right over Perk. On the other hand, Shaq always gives Bynum trouble from all the games i've seen.

For the same reason that Ginobili came off the bench for so many years. Balance. Especially when Shaq will only play 20 minutes.

I like starting the game pounding the ball in to Shaq, and Perk will need to be eased back into the rotation. I don't see any of chemistry issues since Perk and JO have the health issues that make it hard for them to complain about minutes.

Perkins is a team first guy who cares deeply about winning.

Even if he doesn't get the starting job back, I wouldn't expect him to cause any problems. I would be extremely surprised if he did that. He is not that type of man.

It's not just Perk that's said he'll be the starter, Doc's said the same thing. And even if he does start Shaq won't see much of a dropoff in minutes played.

  • You say when......
I'd be surprised if Perk was back soon...Happy, but surprised, and even more if he was able to give 50% of his old self...at D that is..his old O was a high school player who didn't listen (ball low, fades, weak reverses..!) in the beginning of last year he was strong on O, from training and learning in big man camp...but he soon forgot all that...and don't forget his Tech's....he was getting so many of them...dumb ones too....BUT, if he is back, we could really be big vs the lakers, and should be strong on rebounds at last...take some work from kg and rondo, free them up, free kg up from all that blue collar work...!

I started the season as a firm advocate of Perk starting, with Shaq coming off the bench as an anchor for the 2nd unit, but Shaq has been a much better fit with the starters than I imagined.  He's capitalizing on the attention given the "big 4" better than any of our other big men could hope to, KG and Rondo are doing a better job mitigating his defensive weaknesses than the bench guys could and his presence on the boards is doing a lot to free up our transition game.

Furthermore, I think JO and Perk would make a very solid back-up combination, as Perk's relative mobility at the 5 would be a better fit with JO's slower feet at the 4.

No Chemistry issues at all.  Great problem to have.

I thought the team might get half a season at most out of Jermaine in a non-contract year.  Now I wonder if they'll get even a quarter.  If for some reason they do there'll be even less of a reason to rush Perk back.  They're getting great play from Shaq and surprisingly good play from Semih.

it's kind of simple. When Perk comes back he gets the crumbs. It's not our fault he didn't develop some offense. Besides he's going to be a foul machine. This year is it. Most important to get the most out of our best Post Season. It won't be easy. If Shaq and the other O are healthy, Perk will be the 3rd option.

Things like this always seem to work themselves out...particularly when you have a group of big men as old and fragile as the C's have.

Exactly.

Reporter: Is it true that you're putting Shaq on the shelf for the remainder of the road trip?
Doc: Yes.
Reporter: Is it true that you'll be starting Perkins?
Doc: Yeah, he's healthy, he's cleared to play, and we thing he needs the burn.
Reporter: What exactly is wrong with Shaq though?
Doc: What do you mean?
Reporter: Strained achillies?
Doc: No.
Reporter: Tendonitis? Arthritis? Back Spasms?
Doc: No, no no.
Reporter: So what than? Why's Shaq sitting?
Doc: He's old as crap and he's tired. He's got old-itis.

Shaq is better and Perk knows that. Deep down he'd understand the demotion.
