Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee Friday and will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season, the Trail Blazers announced this evening.

It's a rough week to be a Blazer's fan...

Ouch.  Thanks for the quick news (tp).  Need to restrategize the "2010-2011 comeback of the year" fantasy squad...ugh.

Biggest bust in any sport, right?

Well can you think of another in terms of hype vs performance?

I give him a nod over Ryan Leaf cause of the 1 vs 2 thing, although it wasn't a talent issue in Oden's situation. But does that matter?

sad

yeah, it's really a bummer for him. He must be taking it rough. I think his career as Blazer is officially over.

I feel bad for the fans too, first B. Roy now Oden. Yikes.

It is sad.

But this is the reason why you sometimes hear pundits say "I know there were some injury concerns, but can you believe player X slipped this far in the draft? What were people thinking?!" True, but sometimes that injury history rears it's ugly head, and when you pick a player #1 you can't come up empty handed, and there were concerns here.

Similar to their "lucking" into Roy. He's bone-on-bone forever now, and signed for 80+ million.

Sam Bowie redux.  A shame.

I doubt they will ever draft another big over a surefire player again, unless they think third time is a charm.

Wow - this is tough. But he is still young.

I would say that you don't give up, even with this setback. He gets this surgery done, and he's 23?

I'm no medical expert by any stretch, but do you just give up as a player, even with this latest event?

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
He'll make someone a really happy MLE contract at some point. He'll put 2 or 3 healthy years together, and even at 70-80% of his current skill/talent, he's an NBA rotation player.

But, that's all a maybe (and probably a hope). Poor kid.

Terrible. It's got to be tough, rehabbing after the last surgery, only to hear the doctor say, "We've got to do it again."

He's young, so he still has a chance to redeem his NBA career. I hope he does.

Brutal. So sad.

Portland seems cursed and this of course helps LA.

I disagree it's sad. When you do roids and HGH at the age of 16 or 17 these things happen. Plus you get millions to do it.  It's sad for Portland fans, but not him.  Or maybe he just suffers from gigantism.  But I have my doubts.
