  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
So, get this. I'm reading ESPN rumors and I stumble across this little gem.

Quote from: ESPN Rumors
Peter Vecsey of the New York Post talked with Carmelo Anthony over the last couple of days and thinks the Knicks and not the Nets are at the top of his wish list.

Vecsey writes: "Don't reach for your spectacles, you got that right; the Knicks remain a viable option. I repeat, a viable option. ... the Nets, at the very least, appeared to be the frontrunners. Now they're also-rans, I'm informed. In a nutshell, the fact they're two seasons away from moving to Brooklyn from New Jersey places them in the loser bin."

Vecsey adds, "I can't tell you how much Melo admires James Dolan's willingness to great lengths to avoid contaminating Madison Square Garden with a loss."

Anthony wants the Nuggets to prove they can challenge for a championship and if they can't, he'll leave by a trade or free agency. Either way, he won't leave the team waiting for him to make a decision.

"I'm not Chris Bosh," Anthony declared. "We're not the same person. What I do will be straight up. Management knows that."

Howard Beck of The New York Times thinks the Knicks should focus on getting a point guard like Steve Nash, now via a trade, or Chris Paul and Deron Williams, when they can become free agents in the summer of 2012.

One NBA scout doesn't think Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire would make a winning duo, right now.

"Carmelo needs the ball in his hand all the time to be a factor," the scout said, concluding, "Carmelo is not the immediate answer."

Most of the blurb is standard off-day muck that you see: "Blah blah blah high profile trade target. Blah blah blah speculation. Blah blah blah, no progress."

But, than there is this lil guy:
Quote
"I'm not Chris Bosh," Anthony declared. "We're not the same person. What I do will be straight up. Management knows that."

Now, I like the implied message here. Carmelo is putting down the shinanigans that happened this summer. He's putting down how certain high profile free agents allowed their otherwise talentless teams to twist on the spit when they made their choice to ultimately play somewhere nicer. I like that.

But, Chris Bosh? LeBron James was such a big freakin deal that he had an hour long ESPN special that t'd off the entire nation so he could tell people how he was screwing Cleveland. LeBron James was such a big freakin deal, that Nike needed a bigger rehabilitation ad campaign than the one they used for multiple times over adulterer Tiger Woods. LeBron James is such a big freakin deal that Southpark has spoofed said Nike ad nearly a dozen times in the past 3 weeks. LeBron James is such a big freakin deal that he HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR TIME MAGAZINE'S MAN OF THE YEAR.

But, Carmelo Anthony went after Chris Bosh, because he's not playing well..because he doesn't "keep a list" like LeBron does. Carmelo Anthony went after Chris Bosh because of Miami's top-paid-trio, Bosh is the only one that Carmelo Anthony can ostensibly be said to be "better than".

(EDIT: Re-phrased for clarity)

Carmelo Anthony may not be Chris Bosh, but he comes off as a bully and a diva through picking on Chris Bosh when there was another much more relevant and prominent target available. He might not be a Bosh, he's kind of being a bit of a LeBron.

Breaking news: Carmelo Anthony is LeBron James!

Quote
"I'm just like LeBron," Anthony emphasized in the Nuggets' locker room following Saturday's practice. "It's all about winning. That's all I care about. I want the chance to compete at the championship level. All the other stuff is irrelevant."

All about winning. And media attention. And shoe contracts. And commercials. And media attention. And my entourage. But mostly winning.

I think you might be overreacting to a stupid comment by Melo.

The way I intrepret it, Melo believes Bosh acted as a follower. He knew his friends Dwyane Wade & Lebron James were going to team up, and he asked to come along for the ride. He doesn't go after Lerbon b/c he believes he played a strong part in deciding to go to Miami. Whereas Bosh was going to go anywhere that Wade and/or Lebron went.

Carmelo is going to make his decision as either completely as an individual, or as the leader of another Miami-like situation. Or quite simply, New York or bust.

I dont really see how Carmelo is being like LeBron.... Carmelo has made Denver aware of his situation. He hasnt signed an extension, making it pretty clear that he wants to test the waters of the open market, its up to the Nugget's front office to either make a trade or let him walk. If they make a trade to a team that Melo wont sign an extension with the trade probably wont be made...

LeBron didnt tell anyone of his choices or his thoughts on what he was going to do. Neither did Bosh, at least Melo is giving the team options and is doing his best to keep his former team still intact and have a future rather than completely turn his back on them.

Also on a side note.... Melo in green next year? Total pipe dream, but stranger things have happened.

"I'm admittedly slow on the uptake, but Anthony gave me the impression he's singularly interested in playing for a team in the habit of inhabiting first place and bedding championships -- you know, like the Lakers, Celtics and Spurs. So, I was not all that surprised when Anthony revealed to The Post he has not expunged any of those three teams from his bottomless pit of gaping options"

The way I interpreted it, Melo is saying that Bosh never commiting and letting Toronto twist in the wind while he decided was the bad thing he didn't want to be compared to. Saying he was going to treat management "straight up", as in having no ambiguity, is what I thought Melo was saying was different. I didn't get any of that follower stuff. I thought it was more about transparency.

I dont really see how Carmelo is being like LeBron....

Sorry, that was poor communication on my part. What I was saying is that Melo was being overly public, kind of a diva, and a bit of a coward for going after Bosh and not LeBron, although what the two of them did was nearly identical.

No, and I agree with the way Melo is handling this. He can't be any more frank or transparent than he already has been and still follow the CBA, so yeah, I like that.

The problem I have is him (to me) calling out Bosh for something LeBron also did, and did in a worse way.

It actually would have made a little sense before Pierce signed that extension.  A sign-n-trade that shipped Pierce with a two-year extension, Bradley, Big Baby and a couple of picks to Denver for Melo would have been about as good as anything else Denver could get.  I can't see Denver wanting to take Pierce on for 4 more years.

Just by not signing Isiah Thomas to an unprecedented "King Of The Garden" lifetime contract, James Dolan is really proving his restraint.

So in review:

Melo is not Bosh.

Melo is James.

Melo is (fill in the blank) Wade.

Melo is equal to or less than the sum of Bosh + James divided by Wade.

Mike
It wasn't an extension. Pierce opted out of his old contract and was a free agent. We signed him to a brand new contract.

The other option was Pierce walking.

So as Wade approaches 0 points, Melo approaches infinite whines?

I'm waiting for Hollinger to confirm this, but I believe you are correct, sir.
