They may reach the 70 wins plateau this season because they are after the HCA in the entire playoffs considering the fact that their core are all aging. Kobe is 32 today, Odom and Artest at 31, Gasol 30 and Fisher 36. They may lose everything in their tank if they get to meet either Boston or Miami in the Finals. We are 9 to 12 players deeper than them and Miami can play their young big 3 all-game and all-series. Another reason that they may be able to reach 70 wins is due to the fact that there is not much competition out West and only a handful of teams over the entire league may be able to dent their win-loss record. Out West, only the Spurs, Thunder and barely the Hornets are capable of competing against them. The East teams like Boston, Miami, Atlanta and Orlando will only meet them twice so basically the 70-win objective is doable.
Lastly, LAL are playing so well this early part of the season by capitalizing on the opposing teams'system weakness - like using too much of athleticism and one-on-one plays/performance of their franchise player ie Roy, Melo, Nash, KD, Nowitzki, DWill, etc - and employing their own "fluid" system. Except for Odom, nobody among them is even stepping up his level of play. They are using their system by introducing more PTs for their new batch of shock troopers ie Barnes, Caracter, Ebanks and Blake which is going to pay off positive effects all-season and through the playoffs.Unless the West teams start to give a really good team play and competition, LAL will rack up all the wins they need for the much needed HCA.

I would be shocked if they reached 70 wins.

"nobody among them is even stepping up his level of play"?

Apparently you are unaware that Fisher, Brown, and Artest have done exactly that in terms of 3-pt shooting, (Lakers lead the league in 3-pt shooting in percentage at 45% FG and are 2nd in makes, with Odom #1, Fisher #2, Brown #7, and Blake #13 in the league, all well above their career averages) and that Gasol is playing his best ever (although a small sample size vs crappy teams, he's at 24.1/10.9 (5.3 ppg/1.8 rpg over his career averages) and shooting over 80% from ther ft line (6.1% better).

But I do agree that the Lakers (like every team) know that HCA is key to postseason success, and will try within reason to get the best record as they always do.

That being said, it would be close to miraculous for any team to get 70 wins in today's NBA - I'm guessing 67-68 is the ceiling with this many good teams (rather than pushing the win totals higher in the race for HCA, it results in the opposite effect as we've seen the last few years).
