For Crownsy and ballin - this is what gets me. Maybe I was somehat "Sheltered" from a lot of what was going on in the world while I was in the Navy. In fact, I was gone a lot the last 20 years.

All I was focused on was the Mission, whatever it was at the time.

Now that I am out? I am seeing a society where folks just say what they want. Maybe I'm from a different time.

Who gives a bleep what Garnett said? It's a freakin' joke. Stand up comedians and movies make fun of things like this all the time and people don't get called out about it. Its trash talk during a game, whatever. And Charlie V brining this to his crap twitter? Hasn't the NBA banned twitter yet. KG did what KG does...I like everything he does on court..including the trash talk...its nothing new. Charlie needs to grow a thicker skin...KG clearly didn't make fun of or insult cancer patients...and Charlie V...challenging KG to a fight in the ring? really? lol.

Trash talk is present in all team sports...although in varying degrees. I'm not sure if anyone on this blog watches Cricket...but if you do then you know that the Australian cricket team does a LOT of trash talking..they call it 'mental disintegration'....the thing is they are also nice guys off the field and have a beer or two off the field with the opposition team.

I love KG and I'm glad he is a Celtic.

A month or so back, someone on this blog used the word retard and about 20 posters jumped down his throat.  I guess a lot of people think it's perfectly fine to say innapropriate stuff while playing a game, but if you type that stuff at your computer, you're an insensitive jerk.

What if you are in a heated celticsblog debate?  I'm guessing it's not fine to insult other posters to prove your superiority.  NBA players must be such gladiators and competitive animals, that they get a pass for everything they say or do.  Especially the ones in the green uniform.

I know in the past, there was more of a deliniation of what can be said where.  You would watch your mouth with women and children around, etc.  But from what I have heard (I wasn't there, so it is all second hand), in the "good old days", when you had a group of guys together in a closed setting (like say, a sporting event), there was absolutely no filter.  

I think the problem today is that there is no longer the privacy that there was in the past, and people have also lost that delineation of when it is not appropriate to speak freely.

Setting and situation matters. What I can say at work is more restricted than CB, what I can say on CB is more restricted than what I can say during a poker game, etc...

Was it a classless comment?  In my opinion yes; but I'm sure worse thing are said on the court all the time that we never hear about.  

All this talk about athletes being role models; if you want to look up to an individual just because he's a great athlete that's your own fault and problem.  Being a great athlete does not mean you have great character.  It's like a little girl looking up to somebody just because they are pretty; all very shallow.

I respect the games of these players and their dedication.  I do not know any of them personally to pass any judgement on them outside of the arena.  I know guys like Pierce and Allen are heavily involved in charitable causes and I respect them for that.

Forgive me for repeating myself, but I think there are places where it is more innapropriate than others to speak in certain ways.

I imagine you wouldn't speak the same way in front of your kids or your boss as you speak when you are hanging out with your guy friends.

This is part of culture, and has been for a long time.

Now, maybe what KG said crossed even that line in that particular circumstance, but there is a huge difference in what is appropriate on a basketball court compared to on this family friendly blog.

Nor have i ever said that I found what he said appropriate in any way.

As i said in my first post, to me it's two completely separate questions.

Did KG go to far? to my mind, yes.

Should CV have gone public via a text message and challenged KG to a fake fight, instead of handling it face to face as a man does?

no, what he did is bush league. To tie it back to our discussion of how it used to be handled, while it has emerged in books now long after the fact, no one ran to the beat reporter and avoided a face to face meeting to slam guys like Bird and MJ for trash talking. what happened on the court stayed on the court.

Also, me and Ballin were more agreeing about how posters tend not to be able to separate attacks on their arguments from attacks on themselves, which they label as "beef" or "hating". I don't know Ball's stance on this whole issue, so I can't say whether i agree or not.

Yes Chris - it is a different time now - and to be frank with you this concerns me.

I had a brother who passed away due to complications from Down's Syndrome back in 86. Out of all the friends I had, there was only one who took disrespect to him, and he was dealt with.

Fast-Forward 25 years or so? Now it is vogue to say this stuff, disrespect one another. I blame CV for some of this, because he could've handled it man to man, but still KG had to have known in his 34 year-old brain that he shouldn't have said this.

Actually, from my experience, I actually think it is the opposite.  I think people were much crueler, and much more likely to throw around offensive words 25 years ago.  The difference is, they were also more likely to only throw it around in protected company. 

Today, I think it is much more rare in general, because everyone is PC conscious, however, when it is used, there is less concern of who is listening.

I tend to believe that 25 years ago, the trash talking was much worse than it is now, because that is what guys did when they got around each other.  But I guarantee you, no one would have then repeated what was said on the court to the press 25 years ago.

You guys got to realize that KG most likely didn't mean what he said.  It's just a tactic to get into a player's head.  A lot of the best defenders just happen to be some of the best at trash talking (MJ, Payton, etc).  He obviously doesn't mean anything by it, it's just a game.  You gotta leave this stuff on the court.

If you want to say his statement lacks class that is obvious.  But it in no way represents KG as a person.

Personally, I just think there is a right way to talk to a person and a wrong way to talk to a person.  Just play the game and shut up.  If you don't have the guts to run your mouths against guys like Tim Duncan, Kobe, etc then don't run your mouth at all.  We could sit on this board and discuss all of the bullying that has occurred in schools and I would hope most people here would say that it is wrong.  That's all KG is in these situations.  He gets on the players who aren't as tough, but when the big guys come out, the guy won't say a word.

What really bothers me about this is that KG wasn´t in the least creative or funny.
If you´re using such a cheap and lame insult, do it with some class and taste.
