Looks like the East is weaker than the West as usual - only 6 East teams with winning records to 10 in the West, and conference head-to-head stands at West 9, east 2.

Lakers and Hornets are unbeaten in the West, but only the Hawks made it through the 1st 7 days of the season unscathed.

Details on West vs East:
Thunder are 2-0 (vs Bulls, @ Pistons)
Kings have a 2-1 record, beating the Raptors at home and @ Cavs, but losing @ the Nets.
Mavs are 1-0 (Bobcats)
TWolves are 1-0 (Bucks)
Hornets are 1-0 (Bucks)
Spurs are 1-0 (Pacers)
Blazers went 1-1, winning @ NYC and losing @ Chicago.
The Hawks are 1-0 (Grizzlies)

It was supposed to be different this season - but it might just be the small sample size...

EDIT: Adding last night's Heat win over the Twolves and the Bucks' loss to the Blazers makes the West 10-3 over the East (77%)

I think it's way too early to say which conference is stronger

Teams have only played three games and not only that but not every team has played inter-conference games.

I think the west is again going to have more middling teams. But when it comes to contenders the East is deeper.

Boston, Miami, Orlando, Chicago(with Boozer) all can contend in the East.

In west things get murkier. Lakers and then a gaggle of teams in whatever tier you'd like to put them. I don't feel there are four teams that could win in the Finals out of the west.

Right on Faf with every thing you said.  I think the talk about which conference is stronger is really split along two lines.  On one hand the west is probably a deeper conference whereas the east is a stronger conference with its depth of true championship contenders.

Lol, don't you think it's a liitle early to start comparing the Eastern conference to the West? I mean, each team has only played three or four games thus far since it's so early in the season and I honestly doubt that a huge percentage of those games featured a team from the East vs one from the West.

Yes and if you look at the power rankings you'll find that Toronto has the 3rd best defense in the league.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

It's not too early to spot a one-sided trend such as 9-2 west over east - but I'm sure it will even out as the Contenders according to Fafnir play more games with west teams.

I'm not necessarily convinced that the Heat, Magic and Bulls are truly "championship contenders".

On the other hand one could argue (if not convincingly) that any of the top 6 West teams is a true contender - due to 50 wins being an 8th seed as opposed to a 4th...

It's the same 'ol story.

The East is Top Heavy and then very mediocre with few teams better than the Grizzlies.

The West only has 1 elite but then the West has  a ton of teams better than or on the same level as the Hawks.

So I'd say it's easier to get into the East Playoffs but harder for contenders to get out of the East.
