I'm sorry, but the Mike Miller signing was AWFUL. Why give a guy the max MLE for 5 years to play 40-50 games a year off your bench? Terrible signing. For all the good they did, they overreacted on that one. I like him as a player, but that is a killer contract.
Why?

They're not going to have cap space for 5 years, so why not overpay for the best roleplayer you can get? They'll be in heavy tax land anyways, so who cares?

Because they needed a 3rd quality big WAAAAAY more than a back-up wing.

This is why you'll often see Miller, Wade, and James together on the court a lot. And probably when it matters most, at the end of games.

You may see that line up for the last shot at the end of games when Miami needs a 3, but I do not understand where the idea came from that we're going to see Wade, Bron and Miller on the court alot together.

Last year, the Heat played Mario Chalmers 26 minutes a game and Carlos Arroyo 23 minutes a game.  In the preseason, it's been Chalmers 20 minutes a game, Arroyo 23 minutes a game, while PG Patrick Beverly has played 23 minutes a game and PG Kenny Hasbrouck has played 24 minutes a game.

There is NO evidence and NO indication that Miami plans to play ANY significant minutes this season without a traditional PG on the court.

Mike
I think if Chalmers and Arroyo play well they'll play traditionally. But why in the world wouldn't they slide Wade to the 1 if they were playing Boston? Wade would be a much better match up on Rondo than Chalmers/Arroyo, we saw that match up....

They needed a quality shooter who can play big minutes. I don't think Jones qualifies, Q-Rich would though. But my guess is that Riley after seeing Q-Rich up close preferred Miller.

So, they're paying 5 million a year for how many games out of the season?

Coach Spoelstra would be a pretty good indicator. During their training camp, covered by NBATV, they had a team scrimmage. They put on the court together probably their best lineup in Bosh, Haslem, Miller, Wade, and James during the second scrimmage game (the first had LeBron and Wade on opposite teams). This is the only time we've seen these players on the court together since Wade was injured in the first pre-season game after only two minutes. Why play 5 guys together if you only plan on using them on a last possession 3?

Edit: That lineup started the scrimmage game. It's not as if they were in there together after a few substitutions.

My point is that I think you're wrong that Miami plans to play a lot of crunch time minutes without a traditional PG. Against Boston it makes sense, against the Orlando it makes sense, against Chicago it makes sense, etc...

Pre-season is about seeing what you have, I think Miami would prefer to have good PG play so they can go with a traditional line up. But in the end Miller is a better 2 than Arroyo/Chalmers are a 1.

Wade played the PG position his rookie year and is the best PG defender the heat have.

It's not so much that.  Wade and James will be the primary ball handlers and the offense will run through them. Miller is far and away the best off-the ball alternative they have and you can't cheat off him.

Mike Miller gives the Heat a huge amount of lineup flexibility with allows them to create or eliminate matchup advantages against their opponents.

Miller is a top notch shooter, rebounder and a very good ball-handler and passer. He adds a lot of versatility to Miami.

It only makes some sense against Boston because of Rondo's shooting woes.  But against Jameer Nelson, Rose and most other PG who can hit a jumper, it's a recipe for disaster.

Probably the same number of games we're paying for with Jermaine O'Neal.

Who do you want to spend all their energy chasing around opposing PGs?  Not to mention that if Wade is guarding the 1, who's going to guard the 2?  You think Miller can match up with Ray, Vince Carter, Kobe, Andrew Iguodala, Joe Johnson, etc?

well, give it a few weeks, and it will be clear that you are wrong. Miami will play Wade, Lebron, Miller, Bosh, and Haslem together as the starters. It creates huge matchup problems and is the only way to offset the disadvantage they have due to lack of quality big men. I don't understand how you can use the minutes that Arroyo and Chalmers played last year as an example. They are poor players and played only because Miami had no other options.

which will both be more than the number of quality games we got from paying Sheed. It's all about the playoffs though. You pay to get the best guy you can get to help you win when it really counts.
