..you bumped into him?

I just got back from lunch and felt like I have to share this with all of you. As I was walking into Qdoba in Wellesley, four guys walked in first in front of me.  I noticed they were Danny Ainge, Austin Ainge and two other front office staffers.

I kind of blanked out and didn't know what to say to him, so I just said, "I'm a huge fan and I'm really excited for the upcoming season.  Thanks for putting the team together."  His response was, "Thanks."

If I could do it again, I would ask him for a job on his staff...or at least for some free tickets!

So, I pose this question to all of you.  What would you say to Danny Ainge if you bumped into him?

Honestly, I think it would be pretty rude to go beyond a simple "thank you for bringing a championship back to Boston".

Probably, "Excuse me," or "I'm sorry."

I certainly wouldn't say, "Watch where you're going, jackass." That would be rude.

Ok, let me clarify.

I walked in right behind Danny Ainge and did not literally "bump" into him.  I also wouldn't really ask about a job or getting free tickets.  I was joking about that.

Let me rephrase my question.  Hypothetically, if you had the chance to sit with Danny Ainge for a conversation, what would you say to him?

I think what you asked him was the appropriate thing under the circumstances.  Like Chris said, a thank you is about the best you can do in that situation.

Assuming that he wouldn't candidly answer questions about the team, deals, strategy going forward, etc., I'd ask him how his time in Boston as a player compared to his job with the current team, and which was more satisfying when they won a title.

Just having a little fun with the Newguy.

I'd have to agree with Roy and Chris. Perhaps as an ice breaker, I'd ask to see the finger that Tree Rollins bit.

[Then again, maybe that would provide Danny the perfect opportunity to flip me off. He's a Mormon though, I doubt he'd do that.]

Maybe the more interesting question would be "What would you say to Danny if you were sitting at a bar, and he sat down next to you (and ordered a Shirley Temple)?"

Because at that point, I think it would be more appropriate to ask him a real question or two.

Only because I love trade talk, I might ask him about deals he made, or didn't make. The worst GM to deal with. The worst offer he's ever gotten. The best trade he never made.

And I'd probably ask for his favorite anecdotes about Red and the Big Three.

Wasn't Danny Ainge, but a co-worker of mine not only got to say "hi" to a fairly prominent NBA person, she got to hang out with him a good four hours.  Her daughter is rooming with Stan Van Gundy's daughter, so they got to hang out while they were all getting settled in.  Very cool guy...  and apparently her son (who was with them) has a standing job offer with the Magic when he graduates next year ;).

I'd ask him who he honestly thinks we can get in 2012 (free agency).

You don't think we're better off with Danny *not* thinking about Robert Swift?

I had the opportunity to "interview" (send questions through a mediator) Ainge once and got back the most boring, short, non-instructive answers you could imagine

I was also on a call with him around media day and asked him point blank about the Sheed situation and the answer I got was something along the lines of "you'll find out very soon"

I'm sure he has a better relationship with the beat guys that he knows/trusts but he's pretty untrusting of bloggers I think - which is funny because his staff all seems to read CelticsBlog daily

so perhaps the better phrasing of this question that has been re-worded 3 times already is...

"if you had Ainge under oath with truth serum and perhaps a cocktail, what would you ask him about?"

but somehow I think he'd still dodge your question ;)
