Following the game, Arenas told reporters [his knee injury, which caused him to miss the game] was all a ruse in order to give Young the opportunity for more playing time.

"I know he's kind of frustrated he's not getting a chance to crack the three position, especially since we're going three guards, so I told him I'd go ahead and fake an injury or say something's wrong with me so you can start," a smiling Arenas said in the locker room.

When asked about the health of his knee, Arenas said, "I'm fine," and indicated he would play on Thursday in the Wizards' final home preseason game against Milwaukee.

Assuming Gilbert is telling the truth, his heart might have been in the right place, trying to build some locker room cohesion.  However, it's ridiculous to lie to your employer and undermine your coach's authority like that.

Reportedly, Arenas has been fined, but I doubt he learned anything.

That is simply ridiculous.  Arenas sounds like a seven year old.  Glad he's not on the Cs.

Celtics fan for life.

They should have tried voiding his contract while they had the chance.  Beyond idiocy.

Actually a nice gesture, but there are WAAAAYYYYY better ways to go about this. This guy needs a 24/7 advisor because his conscience is out of it.

Gilbert Arenas is a dumb______. He will never accomplish anything of importence in this league always putting up statistics and stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the fans of this league. Gilbert Arenas is all about Gilbert Arenas. Andrey Blatche is the best player on the Wizards.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

I love this guy.  I think he went to PR school with Maverick Carter, but he is always entertaining.

I have a feeling they were advised that it wouldn't work, and they would just be throwing money away by pursuing it.

Given that he's not a Celtic and never will be, I think this is hilarious.  He and Artest should get a reality show together.

Why assume he's telling the truth and being serious? Arenas is a well known jester. Sounds to me like he was just being playful with a reporter.

Gilbert thinks that his antics are still endearing to fans and doesn’t realize that he is no longer viewed as the playful Agent Zero. By bringing weapons into the locker room, his image instantly morphed from lovable and eccentric gunner to gun toting criminal.

Gilbert has done irreparable damage to his public image and no longer has the luxury of casually taking games off to help a teammate. Switching from number 0 to 8 isn’t going to make fans forget the impact his actions and massive salary have had on a once perennial playoff contender.

The sad part is that I don’t think he understands the reality of his actions yet. Gilbert doesn’t strike me as a player who would maliciously sabotage a franchise. I think he just is not self aware enough to make the right choices.
"      “I can make a trade every day if I want to, but that's not going to help us. A trade that would get us better rarely comes along. They're very difficult to find. Good trades are very difficult in our league and don't happen very often.”

Playful or not, the team took it seriously enough to fine him.  They weren't amused, and regardless of the truth of the statement, Arenas was acting stupid (either for faking an injury, or lying about faking an injury).

"You know one thing I think everyone has to understand some, Gil, in the two years I’ve been here, has been the easiest guy I’ve had to coach. Okay? So people say, ‘Gil, Gil,’ but he's receptive and he will do whatever I ask him to do from a coaching standpoint. And I’ve said that from day one. So whatever role I give him, I think it’s more the opposite where he’ll defer more than he will try to do too much, especially with the group that we have. So I think if I ask him to score, he’ll score. If I ask him to set people up, I think he’ll try to do that. And he did that last year and he’s continued to do that through training camp this year. I think that’s one of the reasons that our younger players have been so committed to what we’re trying to do because how he’s gone about his approach to doing things too."

Flip Saunders when I asked him how he felt Gilbert Arenas would fit into the team's up-tempo ball-movement style this year.

Fair enough, I missed the part where he was fined.
