Not sure if this has been discussed because I haven't been able to follow the blog as much as I'd like to, but Pierce looks like he lost A LOT of weight over the summer.

I live in the New York market so tonight's game is the first I get to see, and that's the first thing I noticed when I turned it on.

I'm just wondering if anyone has heard anything about this or if other people are noticing it. Because I just think that body-wise he looks a lot more like the 02-03 Paul Pierce than the PP of the past couple years. Is it my imagination or is there something to this?

Don't know about a lot of weight, but he looks real good.

Deja Vu, We've had this conversation every year.

He does seem slimmer. But for PP Its not about his weight. Its his fitness level. He starts off strong every season, but phases out latter part of the season. His conditioning gets worse as season progresses.

Hopefully he keeps in shape then because I still think the thing that did us in last year was our half-court offense at the end of games. And that's where we really need a well-conditioned PP to take guys 1-on-1 and either make shots or draw fouls.

I think this is every NBA athlete, even ray allen.

Ray's legs seemed shot by the finals, 100+ games is a lot of time to keep your body in shape and from breaking down. You have to rest between games, not conducive to a ton of cardio.

Ray's legs were fine in the Finals. He took a shot to the knee by Artest in game 3, that he just couldn't adjust to. Last year we were saying PP looked slim. Hope his fitness level is more improved. Hopefully he's stronger as well too. Paul isn't going to be dunking much, hardly explosive, but is a good rebounder.

  • You say when......
Well PP and Ray play a lot of minutes, are older, they get hit alot that you don't see..bball is rougher than hockey..no pads...!  Ankle pain..jump jump jump, run sprint, get thrown to the floor on a layup......Doc-y old boy needs to preserve these guys till the playoffs..i know, win games too......but remember how it was last January....a lot of tired and hurting players.......Ray can't shoot after a ron artest knees him, pp scores like a hockey player most times...he likes to bump off everyone on the way to the hoop....

Obviously he read the "best way to lose weight" thread.

Watching tonight's game, I was also noticing how Paul begins each season seamingly in great shape and fresh and young again.  Then he seems old by the time the playoffs begin.

If this because he slacks off on conditioning or diet after the season starts, it would be great if he fixed the problem this year.  If his legs are just getting tired by the end of the year, Doc really needs to limit his minutes, because the young, fresh version of Paul is a beast.

I was thinking the same thing. I think our memories might also be a little off. He slows down during the season from wear and tear and I suspect people wrongly assume this is due to conditioning.

He was really lean the last two training camps. Seemed leaner than what I've seen this season, but part of it may be how his jersey falls.

I was saying the same thing last season, he seemed like he was dunking and making more athletic moves until he started with the injury bug (finger, knee, ankle, shoulder)

I agree Paul looked like he was dunking more last year (Ray too at the beginning).  I hope that continues this season.

Paul looks to be in awesome shape ... moving faster on his feet, rebounding great, and looking to get to the hoop more quickly. Love it!

He does look a lot better and its not the new jersey.  Paul's weight shows a lot in his face.  I think he is in much better shape this year.  Also looking in good shape, ray (always) , rondo looks like his physique has improved and doesn't look it but i am surprised how well shaq can still motor the floor with his weight.

Don't know about a lot of weight, but he looks real good.

Yeah it looks more like less muscle than less weight.  He does appear to be more spry of course it's only preseason.

From 02-07, Paul gradually put alot of weight on his frame. Some muscle, some fat. Since 08 really he has slowly trimmed down the fat and become more and more lean. This season is just another year in his progression.

He has been speaking about his change in lifestyle and nutrition for the past couple of years in his Truth on Health campaign. It isnt lip service.

Regarding his ocnditioning by the end of the season. I dont know if it is conditioning, or the fact that Pierce plays through most nagging injuries. I wouldnt mind seeing him sit if something minor comes up. He had his knee drained twice last season and he barely talked about it.
