Via Chris Forsberg and Gaffney's Facebook page, the Celts have cut ties with Gaffney:

It's not a huge surprise, if only because Delonte and Wafer are more talented players.  However, I do hope he gets a chance somewhere, since he's a hard-working player who seems like a good guy.

There are plenty of teams all over the world where he could get a chance.

Yeah.  I think we all saw this coming.  And while theoretically he could've been our "big defensive three," having a "big defensive three" who can't get on the active roster, let alone the floor wouldn't have done us any good.

Good luck to him.

I really hoped he would make the team. I think he is the perfect end of the bench player. Works hard and would definitely push the team in practice. He'll be down in Maine at least.

I'm not surprised, but I am bummed.  Good luck, TG.

Von Wafer?  C'mon, he had better be worth it.

No surpise here.  I too hope he gets his shot somewhere.

Unless there is another announcement regarding Lasme to follow shortly, can't see why Gaffney would be let go first unless it was seen as inevitable and he has other options. Really wanted a legit 6'8" wing player on the bench and don't see where Lasme has any of the ball handling or shooting skills to be that player. Lasme is a great shot blocker, but thought that Gaffney was playing well defensively.

It's about time. The guy doesn't have NBA skills. He looked awful most of the Summer league. What was he going to do against true NBA talent… Nothing.

Lasme's just an invitee, no commitment, right?  So even if he were doing great in camp, the C's wouldn't want to publicize it at this point.  But he seems to be the only guy possibly in Wafer's way at this point--and that seems unlikely.

There was short quote from Doc that Lasme was doing what Gaffney did and a little more. The implication is that is why he's still on the roster and Gaffney was cut. The odds of Lasme actual not being cut, though, are somewhere between slim and none.

So, who is left fighting for the 15 spot? Isn't Mario West still on the roster? So, is it down to Wafer, West or Lasme?

  • You know my methods, Watson.
I wish I could say that I was once cut by the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics...  He's not very good, but he'll find work playing basketball somewhere, and that's not a bad life.

Lasme is an ideal for D league play. Not sure what he adds to the roster other than being athletic defender to play against the 2nd unit. Can't see him making the team although he may have more upside since he has not been playing the game as long as the others. With Gaffney what you see is pretty much what you get. If Lasme has improved his shooting and his ball handling perhaps he can contribute - big if.

He didn't exactly look good, either.  5.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.4 turnovers, and 40% shooting in 23.8 minutes.  Those are pretty atrocious numbers, and they'd be even worse against NBA-caliber players.

Those are per-36 minute stats of roughly 7.5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 turnovers.  That would probably be the very worst production in the entire NBA, right around a Scalabrine level without the outside shooting.

Not sure what summer league you were watching, but the guy wasn't good against bad competition. Did nothing in games 1, 3, 4, and 5. He had one solid game. He didn't defend well, which is supposed to be his strength and the only reason anyone on here wants him around. Look at Harangody. HE had a solid summer league, and he's likely a bench player his whole career. Gaffney is an International team or D League special at best.
