Very nice read. Kind of weird to "be back" in 1979. I loved this part:

Quote
The doubt most frequently heard is: can Bird handle stardom? He's not a flash and dash kind of guy. Like a Boston hero of another era, Ted Williams, he doesn't wear ties. He quit Indiana University after a couple of weeks because it was too big. He asked Woolf just to mail him his contract so he wouldn't have to bother to come to Boston and sign it in the limelight. When he bought a home, he got a $100,000 ranch house on a site adjoining Woolf's property in Brookline. When showing Bird another house, Woolf told him, "This is a nice neighborhood, a lot of doctors and lawyers." "I don't want to live here," said Bird. "Who am I going to talk to?"

Seems like this is just another example of what's wrong with sports. On a related note, I'm 33, when did I turn into an old man?

THat depends. When I was 21, I would've said you turned into an "Old Man" 10 years ago.

When I was 23, I would've said you turned into an "Old Man" 8 years ago.

Now I'm 26, and I would say you turned into an "Old Man" 3 years ago.

Ask me again when I'm 30. My guess is 33 will seem pretty young then.

Where's our training camp coverage? >:(

No kidding.  With guys like Shaq, Delonte, Baby, and Nate, a Hard Knocks style coverage of the C's camp would be beyond entertaining.

Shooting both and devoting a series to comparing them side-by-side would be really interesting - the contrast between established veterans and young stars would be a lot of fun to watch.

It'd be kind of like the Rocky/Drago training montage, except the steroid injections would be off-camera ;)

  • Thank you Eddie!
I can't wait for the Miami Cobra Kai to win something like 75 games, only to get humiliated by the Celtics in Round 2.  We're in for one of the best NBA seasons in a long time.

Eh...whatever.  Let them have the spotlight right now.

Not shocked that ESPN would do this.  They know they'll get eyeballs watching this.  They ripped off HBO' sports documentaries with "30 on 30" and now they're quasi-ripping off Hard Knocks.  Originality left ESPN a long time ago.

Love the movie references. Celtics as Daniel, Heat as Cobra Kai. Good job.

How about Miami as Skynet, Celtics as John Connor.

The Lakers need some place in that story.  Would that make Doc Mr Miyagi?
