ESPN is reporting that NJ is the frontrunner for Melo...depending on the deal that could make NJ much more competitive this year and moving forward

"ESPN is reporting that the Nets are in the lead to pull off a trade for Carmelo Anthony by being able to offer rookie Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy's and Kris Humphries' expiring deals and a first-round draft pick to Denver."

I like it for NJ, keep the core intact, add a superstar scorer to go with Devin Harris and Brook Lopez - Travis Outlaw and Anthony Morrow fill out a solid athletic 5

I would really like this to happen. New Jersey would springboard into my 2nd favorite team in the league.

I can't imagine Nuggets fans would be too thrilled with that return.  Pretty much throwing in the towel although you could argue that simply losing Melo is throwing in the towel.

A top 4 pick + cap relief and another 1st rounder to go with the lottery pick denver will inevitably get next draft isn't a bad haul

Favors I'm lukewarm on, but some people think he could ultimately challenge Wall for best player in the draft.

Lopez / Carmelo / Harris is a heck of a foundation.

True, but you're going from being a Top 4 team in the West to a team that, conceivably, isn't going to contend for a couple of years even with the cap relief.

If you're a fan, that can't make you happy.  At least now, a few things break their way (i.e. injury troubles in LA) and you could be in the NBA Finals.

Lakers, Blazers, Rockets, Spurs and OKC are all better than Denver.

The Nuggets are the 6th or 7th (Dallas?) best team in the West.

I think, outside LA, the pecking order in the West is much more open to debate than the East.   Injury concerns and age are two huge factors at play with some of these western teams and will certainly dictate how they end up finishing.

Good deal for NJ and not a bad deal for the Nuggets to start their rebuilding process.

First off I dont agree with this at all... With Melo and a healthy front line the Nuggets are a top 3 team in the West easily and can still contend big time....

To address the post at hand... I feel there is no way Denver does this trade. If I'm the Nuggets, I dont agree to a deal unless Favors and one of Lopez/Harris is involved. I know Favors and cap relief is better than nothing but Melo is worth way more than that, and just because he wants out doesnt mean you should pull the trigger on something less than his value.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
If they really want Harris, I think you can agree to that. He had a down year last year and I am not sure he is ever going to be 'elite'. If they want Lopez, then you really have to think about it. I guess no matter what, though, Carmelo is easily the best player in the deal, so you do whatever is necessary.

If you're Denver, you just look for the best deal possible. I am a little surprised the best they can get is Favors. Teams may be just testing the waters right now, but may up the ante when it really comes down to it. Whatever happens, they can't put themselves in a situation where they get nothing...

Denver isn't working from a position of strength. They have to weigh how much this season is worth compared to going forward from next season (w/out significant compensation for losing Anthony).

I gotta think they'll get better deals than that supposed New Jersey deal, though.  Its that what they settle for, its pretty disappointing.

I think a team like Chicago can put forth a better offer like that and they know a guy like Melo can have them battling right away in the east.

Denver has Billups (maybe 1 big year left, outside shot at 2), Kenyon Martin (injured, and not spectacular to begin with), Nene, and they're trying to trade their best wing player in JR Smith.

Meanwhie they have a really good young PG in Lawson and not much else going forward. They should go big and go young. Favors doesn't look so bad in that tint.
