Four veteran referees with a combined 72 seasons of N.B.A. experience have retired or moved on: Joe DeRosa, Joe Forte, Sean Corbin and Phil Robinson. The vacancies will be filled by five Development League referees, one of whom will stand out for his size if nothing else.

The 60-person staff for 2010-11 will be younger and less experienced, continuing a recent trend. The league has lost several seasoned referees over the last half decade, mostly to injury or retirement.

Steve Javie, one of the league’s best referees, nearly joined that group but will return for a 25th season. Javie, 55, considered retiring after a painful knee condition forced him to miss most of last season. He has decided to return, however. Javie has worked 210 playoff games, including 21 finals games.

Dick Bavetta, who turns 71 in December, is returning for his 36th season despite persistent rumblings that the league is pushing him to retire.

Not the 4 I'd have picked to go first. One can only hope this is an initiative that leads to more competent officiating.

Mike: Everybody 60 or over knows Tommy as a player. Everybody 40 or over knows Tommy as a coach. Everybody 20 or over knows Tommy as a broadcaster. And everybody 10 or under thinks he's Shrek.

Just get rid of them all and start over.  Make them all pass a referee test and if they mess up too many times revoke their license.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Is that shuffling or is that just normal turnover?

The league should have a policy of rotating out the worst refs on a yearly basis.  Crawford, Bavetta, Palmer and our pal Sal should all be gone.

I know they rank the officials, and the lowest-ranking ones are not picked to officiate any playoff games.  Unfortunately, with a lot of decent referees retired or injured last season, some lesser officials were promoted to call games in the first couple rounds.  But you're right, they also need to either regularly demote or fire officials who are consistently ranked near the bottom.

It doesn't matter. We will always whine about the referees because that is what we learned from Johnny Most.

Young incompetent fools will replace the old incompetent fools who are mind controlled by the political, anti-Celtic league office.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

Another TP, Twinbree.  You come up with good finds.  I wish there was an age limit to the refs tenure.  I may be old, but it is time for Bavetta to be relaxing on a beach somewhere for sure!

I'm afraid that Bavetta on a beach would be a very bad idea.  Someone would see him lying on the beach and mistake him for an old pirate corpse.  people panicking about a decaying body being found on the beach.  Just an incredibly bad scene all around that no one needs to go through.

I'm glad DeRosa is retiring. He should have been fired after his stunt in Orlando.

The one where he threw the ball at the fan and then when the fan tossed it back he had him removed from the game.

I think the removal of a fan should be out of the jurisdiction of the referee.

How Joey Crawford still has a job after all these years of incompetence is beyond my understanding.

Him and Eddie Rush would be the first 2 I cut.  If a referee makes a bad call in a split second, that's life.  But when a referee appears to have it out for a player when the ball is dead, then the referee obviously has an agenda beyond doing his job and needs to be replaced.

Great find.  But what I want to know is who are the top 5 anti-Celtic referees that currently are in the league.  Did we win or lose with this move?
