One of my friends is trying to get me to join Twitter. His key selling point is that everyone's doing it. Well, as it stands he's probably the only person that I personally know that's on Twitter.

Someone please explain this whole thing to me. I've tried my hardest and still don't see why it's so beloved around here and in other places. Is there anything that Twitter does with its updates that Facebook or Myspace can't do? Everyone seems to be on both Twitter and Facebook and it seems redundant to me.

And while I do understand the one-hundred and whatever character cap, I think it's stupid. Yes, I know.. Twitter does that so people don't go on long rants and things of that nature. The problem with this comes when you get the people who feel the need to abbreviate everything. Just go and look at Marquis Daniels' page.. I can't read a single post on there.

Then, and I know this is probably just me but I can't ever seem to read when someone is posting and when someone is talking to someone else. I don't know..

So please, Celticsblog. Explain to me why Twitter is so popular. I'm honestly curious to hear some other opinions and insight on it.

I signed up for twitter on my phone, purely so I could follow the NBA news, since it gets tweeted before anything else.  I have since added a few other people (like Adam Carolla, since he gives info about his podcast, and Conan O'Brien...because he's funny), but I have never had the slightest interest in tweeting anything.

I actually think it is a decent tool to get information out quickly, and to follow that information (although it can be tough to wade through at times).  Beyond that, I just don't have a ton of interest.  Same goes for facebook "newsfeed"...I really don't care what your doing, and I certainly don't think what I am doing is any of your business.

Twitter is cool because of things like this  -

vonwafer13 - Lol groupies are so funny

TheNativesLife - @vonwafer13 you dont have groupies, youre the 12th man

vonwafer13 -   @TheNativesLife id rather b the 12th man then the other man lookin at the 12th man whats the view like

vonwafer talked Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. to me!

Thing is - facebook gives you 400 something characters to work with so you can actually write a nice paragraph about a current event and newstory to engage your friends and co-workers with.
Replies have no limit it seems so the discussion can be engaged further. I realize not allot of people do it but I have a couple of times and it can get fun.
I'm not real clear what Twitter does with pictures, videos and notes(same as the blog everywhere else).
But I do agree that, "Just sat down to eat a bagel" and the like are ridiculous status updates. I also get irritated when parents update every little thing their kid does. Nothing against children mind you but it's like the co-worker who is always bringing pictures of their kids in - you don't dislike them but you also feel like you half to take a look when they walk up and then say something nice. I'm sorry I'm a man! I don't like saying, "How cute" and usually don't know what to say in such situations except "nice family".

I hate twitter...The only thing I think its good for is sporting news updates, or trades and such.... But people use it for stupid stupid crap... I dont need to know every second of everybodys life and what they are doing at every minute...thats just ridiculous.

it s basically a glorified away message. thats what used to keep me off of it. but its entertaining. certain celebs/ athletes are absolutely hilarious. and also informative, basically every news outlet updates up to the minute.

but yea, essentially its a mix of an away message and internet message board, that people who otherwise wouldnt be into message boards like.

you ll like it. trust me.

Twitter is useless for people that type "Oh, I went running today"  but for a business or someone that has something useful to say. Its pretty good.

I hated it for a long time until i started actually using for a few days.
