I'm not trying to be a kill joy, but there's been so much sport jerkery in sports this summer it got me thinking...who's the biggest? I'm excludig Rae Carruth and OJ because that's just off the charts.

There's so mcuh to pick from. I think it starts to become a matter of personal style

Maybe I should have said "Who makes you sickest". In that case I'm going with Pitino.

  • Be the posts you wish to see in the world.
Ty Cobb charged the stands and severely beat a crippled fan.  And was a notorious racist even by 1920s baseball standards.  No contest.

WOW. I didn't know that. I just put him in there because of the that comment in Field of Dreams. I figured he did something wrong to be remembered that way in a movie like 65 years later

Can anyone think of any jerks in women's sports? The only one that kinda comes to my mind is Venus and Serena's dad and that PSU women's basketball coach fired for I think sexual harrassment and also extreme anti-lesbianism or something like that.

That French skating judge that took the Russian money in the Olympics comes to mind.

Also no wise guy answers like pointing out emperor Commodus' startling record of 228 wins and no losses as a gladiator or anything

of the group listed cobb stands out. i am sure bigger jerks exist, but they arent on the list.

cobb had a bad reputation during his playing days. one incident in particular is taken by some people to sum up his problems.... (aside from sharpening his spikes prior to games for when he slide into bases.)

***************
"By the end of the fifth inning, Cobb warned the Highlanders manager and the umpires that if the man wasn't ejected from the game, there was going to be some serious trouble. Nothing was done to the rambunctious fan, and so when he called the notoriously racist Cobb a "half-n*****" in the bottom of the sixth inning, the ferocious outfielder climbed into the crowded stands, leapt upon the man and began beating him senseless.

Other fans began pleading with Cobb to stop the physical attack because the foul-mouthed Mr. Lueker had no hands. He had apparently lost them years earlier in an industrial accident. As the crowd pleaded, Ty Cobb responded as he pummeled the man, "I don't care if he's got no feet!"
*************

quite the sportsman that mr. cobb. he got my vote.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

That dude should not be running his mouth though and hiding behind his disability though.  Especially in that day and age, Cobb was rumored to carried a gun too.

Biggest sport's jerk , I am going with David Stern.  Close door draft, fixed finals he is my biggest sports jerk.

But how much of it is due to low IQ and psych disorders?  He did some horrible things, but he was also pretty much a human animal.

I disagree.

He clearly in mentally unstable because of his upbringing and what happened in that hotel room back in '91. I am in the camp that he didn't actually "rape" her, and his reputation alone landed him in jail. Even now he is battling his demons.

Psycho, maybe. But I don't think he's as big of a "sports jerk" as most of the others listed. In boxing, creating controversy gets you paid. He is also much smarter than he looks (by ALL accounts from people that have met him).

Yeah ... I guess biting chunks out of your opponent's ears wouldn't be considered "jerk", lol!
