with the ever-increasing number of (quality) players on the trading block, i wonder if DA can pull an "Ilgauskas" with any of the teams out there. Y'know, that Cavs trade for Jamison that sent Z to the Wizards only to be bought out and resigned by the Cavs a month later?

i don't have a list of players on the block but off the top of my head, they're CP3, Melo, Jamal Crawford, JR Smith, Kenyon Martin & Rudy F. Are Brandon Rush, Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton on the block too?

Danny invented that move with GP & Antoine back in '04-'05.  Didn't even have to wait a month.

If DA can get us Melo by pulling an Ilgauskas move, then that would officially be an 'off da charts' type of a move. But as great as it sounds, I definitely don't think it is possible.

However maybe we could try to pull that type of a move for a bench player.

Anyways when I first read the title, I instantly thought about Sheed. A few weeks ago Pierce made a comment, which some-what indicated that Sheed might come back mid-season. Now I am not sure how much truth his comment holds, but that would be pretty cool if we brought Sheed back to deepen our bench before enter the post season.

i think you have to wait a month or 30 days now. The rules say so.

Why would you mention this without suggesting who on our team would be Ilgauskas?

I don't see us having anyone like that.

First, Portland isn't going to trade Rudy Fernandez for nothing. He's young and cost effective. So throw him out of that mix. Then, exactly which large contract player that we have is Danny going to do that with to be able to land a large contract player like Melo or Paul or Kenyon Martin or Rip Hamilton or Jamal Crawford?

KG with 2 years and $40 million left on his contract

Ray with 2 years and $$20 million left on his contract

Rondo with 5 years and $55 million left on his contract

Pierce with with 4 years and $61 million left on his contract

Those other teams aren't going to buy out players with multiple years left on their contracts or huge money on multiple years. And without at least one player like that the chances of it happening are nil.

They also aren't going to buyout multiple different contracts. So if the thinking is we ship Daniels and Baby and Perk to Atlanta for Crawford, Atlanta isn't about to buy out two to three different players for them to return to Boston.

This scenario is just near impossible to fathom happening this year in Boston.

Yep.  And even a guy like Ray (on a contract of one year, plus an option) wouldn't agree to a $10 million buyout, because he'd be giving up his Bird rights, and therefore losing a ton of money out of his own pocket.

My memory may be faulty on this, but oddly enough, I believe DA was actually on the other end of that maneuver in the Rasheed Wallace trade the year before.  As part of the three-team deal that sent Wallace to Detroit from Atlanta, Detroit sent Lindsey Hunter to the Celtics.  If memory serves, within a week, he had been waived and returned to the Pistons.

All that said, I would contend it was DA's re-acquisition of GP in '04-'05 as you note that led to the semi-uproar about this practice and thus the eventual institution of the 30-day rule.

No way we can get Melo

New in the 2005 CBA:

Players who are traded and then waived by their new team cannot be re-signed by their original team for 30 days (during the season) or 20 days (in the offseason) following the trade.

Wish it could happen, but we don't have the pieces to.  I was hoping there was a chance it could have happened with Sheed, but even then it was mostl likely unrealistic.
