During the post-press conference interview by Gary Tanguay, Gary said something very close to, (I'm paraphrasing here):

"Shaq, you named Paul Pierce 'The Truth' when you were in Los Angeles, and you've played with these other greats ... is Paul Pierce as good as Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant or LeBron James?"

Shaq's reply: "Yes ... definitely".

Granted, he just joined the team and isn't about to talk against a team-mate, but I still found that a very compelling statement by the Big Shamrock.

Thoughts?

Well, Shaq is certainly saying the right things.  However, I don't agree with his statement.  Especially if we're talking about the 2010 version of PP.

I believe that Tanguay asked is Pierce as good as an offensive player as those other guys (but don't know if that matters at all).

And part of Shaq's answer was that Pierce has these herky jerky moves like Nick Van Exel that makes him hard to stop.  Any time you throw a Van Exel reference in there I like it  ;)

It was the only way he could answer the question, though.  This is still Paul Pierce's team.  Shaq can't be seen as undercutting the Captain in any way, shape, or form, even if it means telling a little white lie to the media and the fans.

its not like he's captain in CLE, PHX or MIA...

I'm pretty sure Shaq meant it, I mean he did give Pierce his nickname, and Pierce kept using it...

I know Shaq respects Pierce a lot

He was being politically correct.  Plus, he may have some resentment toward the other guys.  Paul was a great scorer, but not on the level of those three.

The big man is just trying to placate the Boston fan base. If we were talking about the 2002 Paul Pierce, then yes. If we were talking about career achievement, then yes. But present day? No.

Yep, there's really only one answer to that question--Shaq doesn't strike me as stupid.

He is more clutch than LeBron.   Stronger physically than the other two but all three are more athletic.  Kobe is argubly more clutch and a better shooter.

Pierce is as good as them, strong and a good shooter

shoots the ball better than Lebron,
as the above said the 3 are more athletic than Pierce, maybe cuz Pierce packed on a few pounds before KG arrived  ???

Remember when he led the Cs against the Pacers

Maybe a few years ago.  I love Pierce but he doesn't play at that high of a level anymore.  Look at how he got completely manhandled by Artest in Game 7.  The Pierce of old would not have gone down like that, regardless of how good of a defender Artest is (Wade, LeBron, Kobe certainly would not).

Maybe a few years ago Shaq.

That is what they call a leading question. Of course he's going to say Yes, there is no other possible answer he could give as an intelligent person on a new team.

I'm not even going to argue that Paul Pierce is at a level of the three guys mentioned, but I take exception to the claim that Wade, James and Bryant "would not have gone down like that."

As a matter of fact, they did go down like that last season.

In each player's final game of the season:

FG-FGAS  3P-3PA  ASTS TOS OREBS  REBS STLS BLKS  PTS
Wade: 10-24     2-7     10   7    2     8    1    2     31

James: 8-21     2-4     10   9    3     19   3    1     27

Bryant: 6-24    0-6     2    4    4     15   1    0     23

Pierce: 5-15    2-3     2    3    1     10   1    1     18

Based on those numbers, as well as watching the games, one can say that James and Wade went out with very subpar efforts.  The Celtics D obviously had alot to do with that.  Ditto for Pierce, and, as much as it absolutely pains me to write, credit to Ron Artest and the Lakers D in that game 7.

Now, unfortunately, very, very, very, unfortunately, Bryant walked away from his last game of the season a winner.  So, it won't really be remembered what an absolute stinker it was.  Man, a couple of more rebounds, some made 3s, a few plays here or there, and Kobe Bryant goes down as a huge goat.

[dang], this post hurts.  The memories are painful, but the truth must be told.  Those guys are not invincible, and we may be the only team that has the potion to defeat them.
