Used to play pickup ball at URI with Cuttino Mobley and Lamar Odom. Used to lift with Mobley at the gym too.  He's a real nice guy.

One of my former students was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and played for their minor league team before messing up his elbow or shoulder, I forget which.  He is now a lawyer.  Great kid!  http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=drell-001tho

I grew up living next door to John LeClair and a few other UVM hockey players. . They gave me about 20-30 hockey sticks when they moved out. I always that that was cool. Funny but Kirk McCaskill used to live in that same house too when I was younger.
A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.

Push yourself again and again. Don't give an inch until the final buzzer sounds.

I know he's not an athlete, but I've met Pat Burns, as he stops in the biker bar my dad works at a couple times a year. They're pretty friendly with each other, and he's written many-an-autograph there.
Practice? Whatchu talkin about practice?

I don't know anyone per se, but my wife was Bryce Harper's (and Bryce's brother) teacher in elementary school. Although we no longer live in Vegas, she still knows his parents fairly well. Bryce sent her a signed copy of the Sports Illustrated cover he did last year when he was being hailed the Prodigy. We are also good friends with his high school coach. I'm hoping Bryce will give my boys some baseball tips in a few years.

I have met a ton of UFC fighters, and some other celebs at UFC fights (Victorino from the Phillies, etc.). I have a good friend who works for UFC. As an aside, I have to say mixed martial art fighters are the nicest and classiest group of athletes that I have ever been around. To a man, everyone I have ever met has been very down-to-earth and extremely respectful to each and every fan.

In my younger years I once got kicked out of a bar in Newport Beach, CA with the ultimate bad-boy athlete Dennis Rodman. He and his wife were having problems that night, and for reasons that escape me they decided to take their feud to this particular Irish bar. My female friend, in a drunken stupor, decided to play marriage counselor with his wife (at that time) while the rest of us continued to drink. He eventually got shut off. I, of course, made the poor decision to continue buying him drinks until the bartender caught wind of what we were doing.

I've played a pick-up game or two with some eventual NBA players during my time in graduate school at UNLV (Marcus Banks, Lou Amundson, ect.).

That's about it for athletes.
“Being a Celtic is, every decision you make is about the team. Every cut you make is about the team. Every pass you make is about the team. You take yourself out of it. It’s not for everyone. If you don’t want to win, don’t want to play team basketball, and it’s more about you then you’re probably not a Celtic." Doc 2010

I'm currently living and grew up in Wilmington across the street Ristuccia, practice facility of the Boston Bruins.

I've seen Bruins throughout my life, Cam Neely pulled out behind me the other day. It's cool, I normally  beep and wave.

I drive by there on my way to work everyday and I always think that I could be in Market Basket with a couple of the Bruins and would never know it because I don't watch hockey.

When I lived in South Florida I lived near Gary Carter (Mets Catcher), Jack Nichlaus, and Greg Norman.   Greg Norman is a Celtics fan and a nice guy.  He saw me wearing a Celtics shirt at one school function that he was attending and came over to me to talk Celtics.  Jack Nichlaus is a jerk. His kids went to a school in the same district as the school I taught at and he would totally ignore people who would say hello to him and would not even acknowledge them.  After one softball game, his daughter refused to shake hands with our team after we beat them. She just turned and walked away.  Gary Carter was a great guy and volunteered at the local private schools to help out with their teams and always had time to talk to kids and parents when he was at school events.

Ahhh -- that's confirmation for me rooting for Arnie when I was a kid.  Always thought Jack seemed like a jerk -- though of course I never really knew for sure.  Arnie was the draw despite the fact that Jack was better.
