Phoenix signs Matt Janning

"The Phoenix Suns have signed guard Matt Janning to a multi-year contract, the team announced today.

The 6-4, 198-pound Janning was a member of the Suns’ 2010 entry in the Las Vegas Summer League. The Minnesota-born guard started all five games for the Summer Suns, averaging 12.6 points, third-most on the team behind only Gani Lawal and Earl Clark, and 5.8 rebounds, second-most of any Sun (Lawal)."

Well Phoenix just got the steal of the undrafted group of players this year. I guarantee he sees the floor this year. Great system for him too.

I think the celtics dropped the ball with this kid. They had no problem throwing money at Gaffney an Laffayette to lock them up, and Janning outplayed both of them in the limited mins. he saw in summer league for Boston. Then he continued to tear it up for Phoenix.  The only thing he was lacking was his D, and playing with the C's he would almost definately improve there.  Not to mention having the opportunity to play daily with Ray and Rondo his offense would drastically improve and then they could have plugged him right in to the roster when they start losing the veterans.   I think they should have at least gave him a monetary offer and tried to lock him up for training camp instead of just an invite.  Then when Phoenix gave him the offer he may have chosen to stay.  I don't know, maybe the celtics will try to get him when he's in his mid thirties and his best days are behind him.

I think he could be a solid player and contribute for the Suns this year but we didn't drop the ball on him.  At this point we absolutely do not need another small guard, and we drafted a young SG/PG in Avery Bradley.

I'm not a big Lafayette fan but Gaffney brings a lot of potential as a rebounder and defender, which is all we'd need off the very end of our bench.  We have no real backup SF options besides Marquis, Gaffney could provide that. I'd much rather have Gaffney personally.

With Sheed's contract still in play, I'd rather have the slot for a wing to be brought in then bring in Janning.

I liked what I saw, but I don't think he outplayed Lafayette.

I never said either one of those guys would make the roster, nor did I say we should throw Janning in the rotation this year. But I do think he would be a great player to develop behind two of the best guys at their respective positions, Rondo and Ray, and eventually get in the rotation when guys like Ray start leaving. I'm just throwing my opinion out there. I know we don't have room for him here and I think Phoenix is the best place for him to have any chance of hitting the floor this year, and hopefully he does. I always root for the underdog, especially when he comes from a local program.

Cap filler is for making trades.  It allows the Celtics to bring back more salary while that team can waive them and they will not count against the cap. 

Therefor, the Celtics could trade Wallace's contract for a larger contract by throwing those two in. 


Celtics have their development Guard to their roster already.  He was a 1st round pick they really like.


Outside of that, they need players that help them win the next two years, not a bench bloated with projects.

Lol you are right.  Neither dude would see the floor regardless and especially since Doc doesn't play rookies really and IF he did, he has Avery Bradley.

Somewhere there is a heated Janning vs Jeremy Lin debate going on.  This is what happens when you watch too much NBA and take the Summer League too seriously.

Gaffney and Lafayette have value basically as trade assets, since their (admittedly small) salaries for next year count in the calculations when making trades yet their salaries are not guaranteed.  

If Charlotte wanted to unload Diaw, we'd probably need their contracts, along with 'Sheed's, to make the numbers work.  Charlotte would then waive them (presumably).

The real issue with any of these kids is that there are simply no real roster spots available.

Veteran players who'll be on the opening-night roster:
Rondo
Nate
Ray
Wafer
Pierce
Quis
KG
Davis
JO
Shaq
Perk

That's eleven.

Add in Bradley and Gody, both of whom are virtual locks to make the squad.  Thirteen.  'Sheed's still on the books, he won't be on the roster but he'll be traded for SOMEONE, in all likelihood.  We still need a 3.  Fourteen spots accounted for.

One last roster spot, with Semih in the lead for it (already signed, and they like him a lot).  Gaffney and Lafayette will be trying to take that roster spot away from Semih in training camp, or in a longer-shot trying to outplay Gody.  

There's really only space for one real "project" player.
