Brett Favre has informed the Vikings that he will not return for another season in Minnesota, the Star Tribune reported Tuesday.

Favre has sent text messages to teammates saying, "This is it," league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Neither Favre nor the Vikings have confirmed the news but a press release is expected Tuesday, the sources said.

The Associated Press also reported that Favre is saying that he's not returning this season.

Nice little zinger from shutdown corner:

While it's possible that the ankle-related retirement story is real, it's also entirely possible that in a week dominated by Albert Haynesworth, the Hall of Fame, and a rush of training camp stories, Favre's own internal Media-ometer went off, telling him that he hasn't been talked about enough in recent days.

I believe it when the Vikings and Packers play their first matchup and he's not on the field.

This whole rumor is based on the text message, "This is it"?

Couldn't "This is it" mean... this is going to be his last season or this is it, as in we're winning the superbowl this year... or something? Sounds like a lot of speculation, especially since Childress was just on ESPN saying he had to hear it from the horses mouth and at this point everything is hearsay.

...until he throws a hissy fit when the Vikings don't immediately retire his number, then signs with the Bears with some sob story about his tearful daughter wanting another Super Bowl.  If Brett Favre was my dad, I'd probably want him out of the house too.

Ha - no surprises here. He's still got a lot of game left. I'd like to see him get one more ring myself.

I'd like to see what the Saint's coaches said come to fruition.

I'm tired of the whole drama queen phony emotion act and the orgasmic ESPN coverage.  Bruschi got it 100% right with his commentary.

How anyone can support Brett Favre at this point is truly beyond me.  I don't know what's more disgraceful: his increasingly narcissistic behavior, or ESPN acting like a bunch of fanboys worshipping the ground he walks on.

The way he has conducted himself this offseason is a disgrace (nothing new there).  He plays the "Will I or Won't I?" game AGAIN all summer, and then claims that his ankle is bothering him so he can skip all of training camp and preseason.  I'm pretty condfident that after the 3rd preseason game, his ankle would be miraculously healed in time for the season.

He's known all along he was coming back, he just wanted them to beg.  Now he can march into Minnesota as the conquering hero again.  What a self-absorbed jerk!

If I was Tarvaris Jackson, I would ask to be traded or released immediately.  What kind of teammates throw you under the bus to jump on a private jet and beg someone else to come play quarterback?  Look, as much as I hate to say it, the team is probably much better off with Favre under center.  But you just don't publicly humiliate a teammate like that.

Don't even get me started on this guy. Farve is one of the very few reasons I sometimes wonder if I myself am schitzophrenic.

I mean it's impossible people think this guy is good.

It's just impossible.

I mean Allen Iverson made it very clear how he felt about practice for like 10 minutes.

Farve has pulled that exact same act for like 10 offseasons now.  And yet people take him seriously.

How can a guy who has thrown tremendous numbers of interceptions in crunch time be considered good? Remember all those jokes on Cheers that Carla would make about May Day Malone coming in and giving up a walk off home run? How can people that laugh at that say Farve is good?

He's Bill Buckner times like 5, but with a better earlier career.

I just cannot comprehend it.

He's Scott Norwood of QBs.

Remember when Peyton Manning threw that game losing touchdown in the Super Bowl? What if he did that like 6 times, then held his team hostage every offseason for almost a decade? Nobody would like him, right?

I just gotta figure out a way to let this go and just accept this on some level. Can anyone think of a sports equivalent?

While I agree...would you rather have Tavares Jackson?  Yeah, Favre is a joke, and certainly overrated, but he is still one of the top 10-15 best QB's in the league.

So, I don't blame Vikings fans for cheering for him, simply because he clearly makes their team better...but I have no excuse for anyone else who likes him.

I think you guys are both underrating Favre.  At least last season, he was *way* better than top 10-15.

Last season, he ranked #2 in the NFL in passer rating, the 12th highest rating of all-time.  He was 2nd in TDs, 3rd in completion percentage, 4th in passes completed, 9th in passing yards, and 8th in yards per attempt.  He was near the bottom of the NFL in interceptions.  In other words, Favre was absolutely amazing, and probably ranked alongside Brees and Manning as the best QBs in the entire NFL.

Yes, his retirement ordeal every off-season is a joke.  However, last year he absolutely justified all of the hype, and if he's even 85% of that this year, Minnesota will again be a top tier contender.

I took an average.  Last season, he was top 5 or so.  The season before (granted, he was hurt for half of it, but chose to play through it, possibly to the detriment of his team), he was more like 15-20th.  And prior to that, he has been up and down for several years now.

His act has become a joke, and I usually can't stand the narcissitic types, but I enjoy watching Favre more than anyone in the NFL.  I'm not the biggest NFL fan, and I watch maybe 1/3 of the Patriots games, but I watch Favre's team every time the games are televised.  Maybe it's because I like to root for the old guys.  I dunno, but I love watching Favre.

There are so many things I find odd about Farve.

Like for example back in his prime when he won a ring people loved him cause he never missed a game, rarely slid, played hard like he loved the game, was a leader, yadda yadda. I remember one writer once saying he was sure he'd play the game for free.

Now he is the EXACT opposite guy. He skips camp and acts like the game needs him way more than he needs the game even though he's getting $20 mill. He acts like he's doing this big favor by barely giving a major reporter the time of day in his truck for 20 seconds of non-answers.

Did you see when Percy Harvin came back from the hospital and everyone was high fiving him? Farve was in the corner oblivious. Maybe he already saw him, but still.

The only reason he makes any sense is that the Vikes are knocking on the door. But so what. Look what the Jets did with Sanchez last year, and may do this year. The Vikes could have drafted BOTH Jimmy Claussen AND Colt McCoy this year, but just are acting stupid.
