Shannon Brown's offer from the New York Knicks is worth $4-5 million per year, according to one source.

The Knicks have extended an offer to Shannon Brown and are waiting to hear whether the Lakers' free-agent guard will take it or wait for L.A. to make room to re-sign him by trading Sasha Vujacic, two people with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com Thursday.

Brown, 24, played all 82 games for the champion Lakers last season and is weighing whether to join Ray Felton in the Knicks' revamped backcourt or give the Lakers time to clear the room needed to re-sign him. The Lakers didn't give all of their mid-level exception to point guard Steve Blake, so some of it is left for Brown. But that's not really the issue. The Lakers, as usual, are well into the luxury tax. So moving Vujacic's $5.4 million salary for next season would ease the tax hit associated with keeping Brown.

Brown's electrifying transition game would be a huge asset in coach Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo system, and Brown would have a good chance of winning a starting job after starting only seven games for the Lakers last season.

Meanwhile, the Knicks continue to explore trade possibilities and remain interested in Blazers swingman Rudy Fernandez, who is actively being shopped. In their pursuit of a deal for Fernandez, or perhaps Chris Paul if and when the Hornets begin fielding serious trade inquiries, the Knicks have a few more assets to offer than commonly realized. According to two people familiar with how the David Lee sign-and-trade arrangement was structured, the Knicks do not have to wait the standard 60 days before combining Ronny Turiaf, Anthony Randolph or Kelenna Azubuike with other players in a trade. The Knicks were still under the salary cap when Lee was signed and traded, exempting them from the 60-day waiting period, which applies only to players acquired with a trade exception by teams that are over the cap.

I thought the Knicks were out of money after their free agent signings and sign and trade.

Hmm ... it would be a bad move for them anyways. Shannon Brown can't play the point in a system like that and is a poor shooting guard. He wouldn't, or at least shouldn't be, a rotation player on that Knicks team.

Are the Knicks serious?

4-5 mil for Brown? Am  I the only one who thinks he is not that worth that much?

I guess overpaying players has officially become the summer trend for this off season.

How are the Knicks affording that offer?

I thought they were out of cap space after acquiring Amare ($16.5 mil) + Felton ($7.5 mil) + Mosgov ($3 mil) + the sign and trade combination of Randolph / Turiaf / Azubuike ($9.3 mil).

I count a total of $57 million on their payroll.

How can they offer Shannon Brown $4-5 million per annum?

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Good. That means the Lakers are stuck with Vujacic.

ShamSports puts them at a bit over $54M if they renounce Giddens and Barron, but the website isn't always accurate.  Where do your numbers differ from them?

No kidding.  FA's get overpaid every summer, but this year, with so many teams clearing space, it's a little bit crazier than most.

I can't wait until the C's have cap space so we can overpay mediocre talent, too!

Ah, I made a mistake adding up the salaries (I counted a cap hold for JR Giddens worth $1.1 million) ... my figure should have been $55.58 million.

I have slightly different figures for Amare ($16k), Felton (about $500-$700k) and Mosgov ($210k). The rest of the salaries are the same. That is about $725-to-$925k difference. The Knicks also only have 11 players so there is a cap hold for one roster spot. Another $475k. A total of about $1.2 to $1.4 million over Shamsports figures.

So the Knicks have somewhere between $54.66 million and $55.58 million in salaries depending on which salary figures are accurate or not.

So, the Knicks have $2.42 to $3.34 million in available cap space to offer to Shannon Brown.

The Knicks have just kinda reconstructed a new team that is just barely better than last years team. Amare I like, Felton was a good price but I dont think he is a good enough point guard, then they've added a bunch of players that would be 8th or 9th men on good teams. Shannon Brown just adds another overpriced player to the team. Hopefully they can add a second player with Curry's contract or through free agency next year, or else NY is still going to be down towards the cellar.

If they got Shannon Brown, we do they want to bid high for Rudy Fernandez?

They'll clearly be better, but if you're a Knicks fan you have to be terribly disappointed in this offseason.  Amare's an improvement over David Lee, but not by a ton.  Felton's an improvement on Chris Duhon, but we'll have to see whether he can lead an uptempo attack (he's no Steve Nash).  Anthony Randolph could be really good for New York, but he's another guy that's not proven.

They're certainly moving in the right direction, younger, not many dumb-ass contracts on the books, but now it seems like improvement's going to have to come from real player-development rather than free agent signings.  Unless they manage to get Chris Paul ;).

Brown would be the 12th player, so the roster charge for the minimum number of players should count towards what they can pay him, so you can add another $475K, putting the max at about $3.8 million in a best-case scenario, which means they should be able to offer a contract that averages $4m.

New York's roster may not look like a huge improvement now, but they do have the roster flexibility to perhaps sign a max free agent next year.  If you want to see a ridiculous amount of roster flexibility, check out Minnesota, where Michael Beasley is the highest paid player and no one makes $5m or more.
