That being said, what the heck are they thinking calling the team the New Zealand "Tall Blacks"?!?  Good lord.

It's a reference to their famous rugby team "The All Blacks" who are so called because they wear all black. Not a racial thing at all.
http://www.allblacks.com/

I don't know. Even if true, that logic is hardly very reassuring.  The "All Blacks" team sounds even more racist than the Tall Blacks team!  And we thought Americans were bad with teams like the Redskins.

why is a word about a color all of a sudden racial..you can call a guy Whitey...and no one says nothing about it. America provides more EQUAL opportunity for all than anywhere in the world..some don't want real equal..equal means you get nothing special, only what your work  pays...like everyone else. I am color blind.....you are who you are, you represent you.

Also remember  that the cultural context is different in new freaking Zealand.

Being a New Zealander myself, albeit one who lurks more than posts, I guess I should chuck my 2 cents worth into this discussion.

I completely understand how the word "black" can be taken out of context, but in this instance this train of thought couldn't be further from the truth. Most NZ international sports teams wear a black uniform so the trend grew out of this. The first such instance was with the All Blacks, the national rugby team - there are a couple of trains of thought as to how this originated but I do believe that it was in 1905 when the New Zealand team was touring Great Britain. It is attributed to either a typo (the daily Mail newspaper talked about the NZ forwards (the big grunt guys up front) as having the skills of the smaller faster backs and described the team as "all backs" which was then possibly mistakenly written as all blacks) or in reference to another newspaper article which descirbed the team as all in Black except for the Silver Fern (the emblem on their jersey)on their chest and their bootlaces. However it came about it was something that came out of the English press.

However it eventuated, in the world of rugby you couldn't find a team which is more respected and ethnically diverse than the All Blacks. New Zealand is an extremely diverse country with a high European population along with the native Maori people, people from just about every Pacific Island, India, Asia and immigrants from Britain and South Africa. Over the years the All Blacks have been represented by people from almost all of these different and diverse groups.

The trend of calling our teams "black" grew from the All Blacks as other teams adopted a black uniform, one which because of the All Blacks was instantly recognisable as New Zealand (particularly amongst the Commonwealth and rugby playing nations of the world) Sadly it has gotten to the point of overuse, amongst others we have the Black Caps (cricket team) Black Sticks (womans field hockey team - also jokingly called the "Stick Chicks" ::) ) and of course the Tall Blacks.

FYI the All Blacks are the number one ranked rugby team in the world and are the most famous and powerful brand in world rugby to the point where Adidas uses them as one of their banner teams for advertising globally - but obviously not in the US where rugby isn't a strongly followed sport.

So as I mentioned the word in this instance could be taken out of context but is not the case however it may seem, a quick look at some of the pictures of the All Blacks will quickly illustrate that there are some pretty big, mean guys who wouldn't take kindly to being in a team which was named in terms of race!

Also I forgot to mention, that I saw the article when it was posted here in NZ last week, to be honest i read it on a few local sites and  I think the whole thing was a bit tongue in cheek and perhaps has blown out of all proportion. That said being a C's fan.. i'd love to see the big guy suit up for us!!

Well, i  have no problem with the name of the team..it is simply that..just a name. And if perk plays there, it is okay with me..!

Thanks Migman for the context.  I think most posters would agree that the name causes a double take when read out of context, and now that we have the history, the name makes a lot more sense.

To the 'color-blind' people out there....I try asking a 6'10'' inch black guy (or anyone of color, of any height) who grew up in the States if he thinks the world is color blind.  You might not like what you hear.

I think it's one thing to be confused about the word and thinking it could be offensive, but you gotta at least use a little common sense when thinking whether it should be offensive or not.  If I am not mistaken, the New Zealand team is mostly white in the first place.  I think in every context allowable it still doesn't make it racist.  The only thing offensive I guess is for the point guards, since they probably arent as tall.  Also, the New Zealand soccer team is known as all white because they only wear white.
Baby Jesus!

Whilst this is partially true Amonkey, quite a few of those "white" guys have either Maori or Pacific Island blood coursing through their veins!! And a good point about the All Whites, obviously we New Zealanders are not to original in our thinking when it comes to team nicknames!!
