I think you are confused about Tony and his intentions and the role he played on this team.  To be so angry and say such hateful things... sounds a lot like Dan Gilbert to me.



The fact that other teams were offering him $$$ we couldn't match and his teammates clearly distraught about him leaving (Paul Pierce coming out and saying Danny needs to do more the day after Tony signs with Memphis) speaks enough about Tony and his game and how appreciated he actually is within the basketball community.

This is what Tony says at the end of the article:

"I don't mind embracing the role, but there is more to my game. Let's not get that twisted," Allen said. "Whatever I could do to win ballgames. If that's just passing out Gatorades or flashing towels or giving somebody a high five, I'm willing to do that."

Yeah, he sure sounds like a "tool" that's running a "gang" as you put it.... someone in this thread is a tool and it's not Tony Allen.

As someone who has always been very harsh on Tony and his game I have to say, I think his comments completely innocuous. He meant no harm and might have opened up a bit more than he might have wanted to regarding how he felt he was used or treated in Boston, but he didn't say anything bad.

Good luck Tony and I hope you really succeed in Memphis, even though I don't think he will, just my opinion.  If you wanted to get out of the shadow of players Memphis was not the best choice TA.  They already have OJ Mayo and Rudy Gay at the 2 and 3 and he's not going to get a lot of time at those positions more than he would here and he'll be in their shadows.  The only position he'll probably get more playing time is as the backup point and not even much.

IMO Tony like he was saying just wanted a new start and expand his game more, even though I don't think he'll be able to do expand his game in Memphis any more than here.  The overshadowed part by Paul and Ray is not a good reason for him to leave IMO because like I just said he'll still be overshadowed by Mayo and Gay. 

IMO it was a bad move for TA to go to Memphis.  I wish him all the luck and hope that he succeeds, but in all honesty I think he'll end up being unhappy there and won't like playing for Memphis.  After not getting as much time as he thinks he will behind OJ and Gay he'll soon find this out.

I don't "hate" him - I really don't know the guy personally.  But I don't like his game, and I don't like a lot of what I read when he found himself in a car late one night, asking one of his posse to "F_ _ _ him up..."  I will never lose that perception of Tony.  Funny, but if you're neighbor did that, you'd be suspicious of him, right?  But since he's a basketball player for our beloved Celtics, then it's cool...

Sorry, I don't buy that.  Like I said, I won't miss him.  Maybe he is a great person and a wonderful teammate.  But he's reached the ceiling on his game, and it's a limited one.  Guys like him can be replaced, and he will be.

But to construe my words as "hate" is a little far...  My loyalty is to THIS team, not Tony Allen.  I root for the name on the front, not the one on the back.  If Pierce left tomorrow, I could care less as well...

TA you're a good defender... applaud now I guess but here's the thing. Your a SG/SF hybrid who is a slasher. You can dunk, but so could Gerald Green, and make layups using your athletisism. But I still thought it is vital that YOU'RE A SHOOTING GUARD WHO CAN'T SHOOT. What talent are we missing? You have an awesome talent of getting hurt on plays that don't matter... and you can run and don't give up on plays most of the time.

I don't see you getting much playing time because of Conley, Mayo, Gay. You'll be the 7th or 8th guy off the bench unless the draft picks they have don't play well and in that case you might be the 6th man. Good luck but don't feel bad about us... we'll replace your defense... there are plenty of candidates that the C's are looking at.

I'm with you. Tony Allen reached his potential in a role on a championship caliber team. Leaning on him to do more than he did for us will magnify his flaws, especially his stupid turnovers and bone headed plays. Also, Danny offered a similar contract to Memphis, dollar wise, just couldn't offer a bigger role on the team than what he already had. And I too root for the team and not individual players. Pierce is kind of an **** in my opinion, if he was on another team, I'd probably not like him much, but since he's in green, I do. Same goes for TA and anyone else that gets into stupid $hit on and of the court.

I've never heard Doc or Danny say anything about Tony's supposed "lengthy list of off-the-court issues" that you seem to claim out of left field.

How is that something that sticks out in your mind about Tony, who by all accounts seems to be a great locker room guy.

As far as he defense being overrated, maybe it is... but maybe you should google search what Kobe Bryant has to say about Tony Allen's defense, before claiming "we" here at celticsblog "chronically overate it" as you put it.

Each second that passes each day, I dislike TA even more.

He is a tool, and I guarantee you he will be riding the bench much more than he ever imagined.

I also hope the Grizz finish in dead-last. And then they get screwed in the lottery.

Tony might ride the bench for Memphis.  But he was a helluva lot more than a "tool" (whatever that means) for us.

I think TA over estimates himself.  If you have that much experience, how come you don't understand when to pass the ball up on a break ?  getting the ball to your PG instead of over dribbling into a crowd ?

Experience is one thing, smarts is another.  Tony is a one dimensional player right now, thats the experience he has. He can't shoot outside with a hand in his face, he doesn't stay in and rebound often enough, and the ball stays in his hands too long during a half court set.  He can drive, yet thats an offensive charge waiting to happen.

If he ever learned to move the ball, and move without it, instead of sitting on it, he'd realize the opportunities that could await him on the offensive end.  I'm just not sure Tony's smart enough to figure it out.

Besides, I don't see him avoiding the IR in the upcoming years.  His knees are bound to give out, and he'll most likely be on the IR before January.  Thats the only experience I see him having, so of course he'll be overshadowed playing with the likes of Ray, Paul, and KG.

I had some serious love/hate with TA but I'll miss him, for what he did on the court last year and just for being a guy I rooted for for 6 years.

Tony probably knows his chances at a ring are slim at best in Memphis.  But he's just reaching his prime years and he'd have a limited role here for at least the next 2 seasons.  He wants to try a larger role before his athleticism starts to slip.  Based on what I've seen, I don't think he'll be very good at it, but I don't blame him for giving it a shot.
