The only reason he can sort of do anything on the court is because he's freaking enormous. Its not 2002 anymore, he's 39 years old. Shaq wasn't nearly as bad as you're suggesting.

Last year, comparing his production to J.O., BBD, Perk, and Sheed, Shaq scored the most points per minute, had the most rebounds per minute, had the most assists per minute, shot the second highest percentage, and had the second most blocks per minute.

He's still an extremely productive offensive player, and he's still above-average at low post defense.  He struggles on pick-and-roll defense at this point.

That said, I think that Shaq is still a force, and I think that playing alongside so many players that he respects would keep him motivated.

True to some extent, but I bet you'll never hear anybody question Larry's hard work or competitive spirit.  Also, moodiness is a lot easier to tolerate when a guy is still playing like an all-time great. 

As a human being, Shaq is a mixed bag.  As a center, he's still well above average, especially on offense.  I think we're in a position to gamble on his character flaws, especially if we can find room for guys like TA, Nate, Starbury, Cassell, etc. (all of whom, to varying degrees, had character questions.)

If Shaq were willing to play 10 minutes a night as a backup center then I would have interest in him.

I'd be happy with giving Shaq the starting job and bringing JO off the bench. At the deadline, the C's can package Davis and Perk (both expiring) for a wing and a marginal fourth big man. JO and Shaq is a huge upgrade over Perkins and negates his presence on the floor.

I think Shaq has the potential in maybe the first time in his career, to play for a very-well rounded team here in Boston. In LA, if he didn't play well, they lost. Same in MIA, and PHX and CLE to some extent.

Here, he can contribute and not have so much pressure on him. He can be our GEICO (Or All-State) in matchups with ORL or LA, provided that Perk isn't ready to come back.

Let's get him a number and a Green Jersey......and then we'll see you in June 2011, LA!!

 Im not sure if this was posted but, the one KEY benefit I see with bringing shaq in is that his personality, will bring life back into the big 3.. He's constantly laughing, joking, and having fun... He's in possibly the longest stretch of his career without reaching the nba finals im sure he's hungry and he doesn't have a team that's going to quit on him.
  A lot of people probably don't remember this but it was a stretch in that Cavs series where Mo & Shaq were killing us off the pick and roll but they stopped doing it for some reason, he can help us more than hurt us!

He really was that bad. The Cavs were worse with him on the floor. His hook shot is literally the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Even at age 38 last year he played with an "adjust to me" style. We can't do that. Also, coincidentally, we get murdered on the pick and roll (minus KG).
