There is a report today that the Hawks are no longer interested in Shaq.  It's pretty obvious he won't settle for the veteran's minimum but I'd still love to see the Celts get him.  I think he'd be a great platoon partner for Jermaine and he could be a pretty big help against their biggest competition.  He (like Perk) is one of the only centers in the league that can out-muscle Howard.  Also, Miami's main weakness is going to be at the center spot next year and getting "the other O'Neal" would help exploit that.  The guy is clearly not anything close to what he used to be but he's still a great finisher and can make an impact for 15-20 minutes a night.  I'm hoping now that his destination is wide open again Ainge will explore something like this with the Cavs:

Sheed's contract and a future #2 (or protected #1)

for:

A re-signed Shaq (2 years/$7-8 million total) and either Anthony Parker (to fill the back-up shooter role) or Jamario Moon (the TA replacement role)

This roster looks pretty good to me:

Rondo/Robinson/Bradley (splits short minutes between the 1 & 2)
Allen/Parker (?)/Bradley
Pierce/Moon (?)
Garnett/Davis
O'Neal/O'Neal/Perkins (IR)

Then all the Celts would have to do would be fill whichever wing hole they had left after making this deal.

I'm sure Gilbert would be amenable to helping the Celtics out and would rather see him go there than have Shaq watch his FA opportunities dry up and have him bolt to Miami along with James/Illgauskas and help "win a ring for the King".  Also seems like it would be in the Celtics best interests to keep him from going there.  Even a 38 year-old Shaq is scary with all that other talent in Miami.

Thoughts?

i would agree that it would be preferable to see Miami not gain anymore help.  but is shaq really any help at this point?  and is it worth it to trade a valuable trade chip (sheed's contract) just to keep LeBron & co. from gaining anymore help?  i would think not.

At this point I don't think Miami is the most dangerous competition for the Celts in the east.  Chicago & Orlando is still much more complete teams with a lot more depth.

Why when I saw the title of this thread did I just know it would have to do with Shaq?

If Shaq is coming to Boston it is for the vet minimum and an acknowledgment that he is to conform to the team and play a small role and if not he will be immediately released.

There is absolutely NO CHANCE Danny Ainge signs and trades for this guy for multiple millions and/or multiple years.

Have to admit, Anthony Parker would be an excellent fit.

when will the obsession with Shaq stop? He does not fulfill a need of ours, and he is so over the hill.

How about a sign and trade for Parker and Moon.  True, in the series against the Celtics they made zero impression on me, but I think that's because they were hardly used, if I remember correctly.

Can Moon play any minutes at the 4?

I think I might like Parker and Moon, and Ben Wallace, more than Parker OR Moon with Shaq.

But I don't know what those guys make in salary.

Wiley, Varejao is not coming through that door, so just chill out on that!

It would be great timing to loot CLE of some of it's wings.

Cleveland doesn't have much talent on the wings.

Their players are comparable to the free agent wings available for a minimum contract.

No interest in trading with Cleveland if the wing player (Parker or Moon) is the primary acquisition in the trade.

If Dan Gilbert was serious with his letter I don't see why he wouldn't try and clear cap space ASAP and hurt Miami in the process.  Now he may have just been a jilted lover which would be the case if he didn't make drastic changes at least by the trade deadline.  I suspect Danny is banking on this sometime down the road.

Antawn Jamison playing a big 3 would be a nice addition.  He struggles with length and strength at the 4.  But alongside our bigs I think he could play the 3 and rotate to the 4 if you go with a small line up and KG at Center and Paul at the 3.

Trust me people, WE WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH JAMARIO MOON!

As a man from Toronto who watched both Moon and Parker for several years trust me, Parker is the one we want (of the two) coupled with Shaq.

Parker can knock down the 3-ball, is especially deadly from the corner, and is a high IQ player.

Jamario Moon on the other hand is simply happy to be in the NBA. The only reason he is still in the NBA is because of how pathetic the Toronto Raptors were (and still are). They started him because he was a fan favorite and he threw down a monstrous dunk one time each game which sent the fans into a frenzy (usually coupled with a loss). Anyways, since he realized he could hit a 3-point shot that's all he's ever been interested in since. His athleticism is his strength but he chooses to ignore it. I'd even go as far as calling him A POOR MAN'S GERRALD GREEN! Seriously!

Anyways, Shaq + Parker (or our beloved Delonte) would make me really happy.

Also, why hasn't anybody dropped the name(s) Jerry Stackhouse and Eddie House...? ???

I understand that signing Nate eliminates our need for House, but Jerry Stackhouse proved last season on the Bucks that he still has his skill set and he still has a very competitive mindset. He comes with zero ego and would be the perfect backup to Pierce/Ray IMO.

What about a monster deal that completely gets them out of a sticky cap situation?

Sheed, Perk, Davis, Quisy ($1.5M) and Robinson ($4M)

for

Williams, Varejao, Hickson, Parker and Moon

If the Celtics ownership was willing to pay out all that money, then yeah, I'd be all for that deal.

Edit: Actually, after thinking about for another moment I'm not so sure.

The difference between Mo Williams and Nate Robinson isn't that significant. Glen Davis isn't the athlete that Hickson is but in terms of current ability he's the better player and useful guy to be able to throw at Dwight Howard. The value of Parker and Moon is decent but comparable to the minimum contract options.

The main draw is the certainty of Varejao versus the uncertainty of Perkins + the potential of Hickson versus the current ability of Glen Davis ... and I'm not convinced that is enough for so much a large financial commitment (Mo Williams + wings).

I would turn down this deal but continue to look to do a smaller deal with Varejao.

Its only about $5 million more than they pais this season... Next season could hurt...

Don't want Williams or Moon.

As the fourth or fifth wing, Moon does not really matter. Williams is the cost of getting Varejao and Hickson.

Great post by the OP. A trade with Cleveland for Shaq and either Moon or Parker would be sweet!!

We'd get another legit big man and either an athletic wing or a very good shooter in Moon or Parker, respectively.
