Hat tip to MBunge for bringing this up in another thread.

It was mentioned when Ronnie Brewer was signed that we offered him similar money to Chicago. This means that we either offered Memphis Sheed's contract or we talked to them about a sign and trade involving TA.

What do people think the chances are Memphis helps us out by us signing and trading TA to them? If we did that we could get a $3.4 MM trade exception. This would give us another chip to use in free agency independent of Sheed's contract. If Danny can get this done I'd give him a ton a credit.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Nvm I thought you meant another player here, didn't notice trade exception as the target here.    I would love for this to happen, but I doubt it.

That would be real nice.  There'd have to be some incentive for Memphis to do it -- like a protected 2nd rounder.... (not like it would take much, from Memphis' point of view it is either: (a) get Tony or (b) get Tony and a protected second rounder).

I hadn't thought about this. Hmm.. what would an exception like that be worth? A second round pick? cash?

It might be too complicated to be generated quickly enough for Memphis's interests.

Memphis is over the cap. They would have to send salary back; we cannot use them to generate a TE for ourselves.

Edit: However, if Chicago is still under the cap, then Memphis could sign and trade Brewer to them, creating a TE that ought to be large enough to absorb Allen's new deal.

I take that back, it is actually costly for Memphis, because it means they won't be able to use the TE on someone else.

To Lucky17's point, I am prefacing all this on the assumption that Memphis does have a TE from a prior trade that would make this possible (as I assume was the OP).  Anyone know where we can check whether this is the case?

ESPN's Trade Machine keeps that info; according to them, Memphis currently has no TEs.

Can someone confirm this? I didn't think that Memphis was over the cap. I guess they could have used part of their MLE to sign him but I haven't read that mentioned anywhere.

Resigning Rudy Gay put them over. They are at $50 mil without his new deal factored in.

They're actually about $25 million over, due to cap holds, not renouncing the MLE, etc.

Thoughts:
1. Is the trade checker updated? I know it wasn't last time I checked. Usually they don't update it until all the contracts are signed for the new season.
2. I don't think Rudy Gay has officially signed. I think they are waiting for him to ink the contract because his cap hold is not as large as his contract. This would allow them to sign more players while still be under the cap then sign him to his max extension.
