Magic To Match Redick's Offer Sheet

The Orlando Magic will match Chicago's three-year, $19 million offer sheet for guard J.J. Redick.

The Magic will make their intention known Friday – the last possible day -- but NBA sources familiar with the front-office thinking of the Magic confirmed their decision Thursday afternoon.

"They aren't letting go of J.J.,'' said the source.

This move will put The Magic's payroll at around $84 million and cost them $15 million in Luxury Tax payments with one player to sign to reach the 13-man roster requirement.

This'll probably hurt us in getting Brewer.

After he signed that offer sheet with the Bulls it was impossible for him to come here.  I'm just more interested in this because it now means the Bulls are going to give Ronnie Brewer an offer better than we can.

In some ways this is good.  The Magic keep bogging themselves down with big salaries for role players.  They seem to be engaging in the Cleveland Cavaliers model of business: keep just enough talent around your superstar to appear you're a contender, but waste so much money on mediocre players doing it that you can never actually give him a legit #2 star.  

Over 20 million dollars per year (actually 23 million per year two years from now) over the next three years for Lewis, 17 million for Carter, 7 million for Nelson, 6 million for Gortat, 5 million for Pietrus, 4 million for Bass, now 6 million for Reddick.  

They're going to be paying over 90 million in salary to a team that really only has one truly elite player.  

Hopefully this means that Howard will be following LeBron's example and maybe we can make a run at him in 2 years.

IMO the Magic are really having a bad off-season.  I love the Duhon and Richardson signings they made since I'm a Celtics fan.  They are both awful signings to me lol.

I'm going back to the beginning of Free Agency when Reddick was mentioned here as a possible replacement for Ray.  Once Ray came back it was a moot point.

You are right about this stuff, but it's not total dead weight on the cap. Unlike, say, Joe Johnson or Emeka Okafor, all of them have legit trade value (save Vince), especially when you compare them to the contracts being doled out this offseason. And of course, Vince is expiring.

Would love to get hold of Howard and his flying elbows. But I expect they'll move aggressively to add a second star or to re-sign him before he ever gets to free agency.
