Last year after David Kahn drafted three PGs in the first half of the draft bypassing perhaps the best PG in the draft(Stephen Curry) and then keeping the worst of the three to start for his team he went to Europe and fumbled his way into not seeing Ricky Rubio for over three years. He then went out and gave Ramon Sessions, yet another PG a four year deal. I'm not even going to get into the Kurt Rambis(triangle offense without one player on the team capable of playing it) hire.  At that time I called the man an idiot and an incompetent front office manager.

And I caught some flak for that.

Now, after coming away from the draft with no less than the rights to 4 different small forwards, they trade for Micheal Beasley a power 3, give $20 million to Darko Milicic and another $11 million to Nikola Pekovic, a guy that scouts say is very good but has never played a minute of NBA basketball. Couple that with the very weird pursuit of Luke Ridnour(a rumored 4 year deal is on the table) and the desire to trade Sessions and now they have opened up a bunch more cap room by trading away Al Jefferson for 2 first round picks and a trade exception.

I understand the man is only in year 2 of a major rebuild but to me he's still an idiot and is starting to look like the worst GM in the league. What a complete train wreck this team looks like!!!!

Agreed. He won't have his job long enough to see Rubio come over.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Maybe he will turn out to be a evil genius, but right now, he just seems to be rudderless.

The most I can make of his philosophy is to collect assets position by position, and wait to see which ones stick, tossing the other ones out.

The problem is, he kills the value of the ones he doesn't want in the process, and ends up taking 50 cents on the dollar just to move on.

He still has set the team up in a decent position to make a big splash, but I will believe it when I see it.

I'm glad Al Jefferson is out of there, now he can play with some good players and a functional team.

I don't know the exactness of the Big Al trade but to not get any good players in return is down right silly....  Why even trade him in the first place?

This is exactly right.  Bring in a platoon of PG's, PF's, and...okay, so far that's it...then let them battle it out.  Love beat out Big Al, but jeez...I would've hoped he would have more value than that.  In the end, IMO, it would be better to develop them to increase their value, whether to trade or to play, but it seems like they're acquiring assets and then decreasing the value, then dumping them?

Is this a new way to build through the draft?  I mean, the draft is part crap shoot, so the more rolls, the better, and all talent comes through the draft, BUT experience seems to show that young players develop better next to veterans, and they don't have any.  I'm surprised they haven't tried to take old guys that want one more year on minimum one-year deals just to have them in the locker room.

But maybe it will make sense in the end.  They have a good PG and PF, and a competent 7-foot Center locked up, along with a platoon of SF's, including Martell Webster, to work out this year.  Perhaps two will work out together, and they'll actually have at least one balanced linup on the floor.

So, what's Minnesota's starting 5?

PG: Flynn, or Ridnour?
SG: Brewer
SF: Webster
PF: Love
C:  Milicic

Love that lineup in the NBADL! 15 wins max in the real league.

I agree nickagneta, Kahn has done a terrible job. The worst mistake so far has been trying to implement the triangle. If they ran their offense through Big Al they would have won 10 more games.

This latest trade is simply terrible.

Yeah, that's what it looks like to me, too. Get several of one kind, keep the best, dump the rest. I have my doubts that it will work. I have my doubts that he is going to be able to judge which one is the best to keep. I have my doubts that he is going to get much for the rest he dumps, though, those that deal with him might.

This is what the T-Wolves look like next season:

- Flynn / Sessions
- Webster / Ellington
- Brewer / Johnson
- Love / Beasley
- Pekovic / Milicic

The issues with the team are obvious; besides Kevin Love, none of those players is clearly a starter-caliber player on a good team.  The bench is also made up of younger, borderline starters.

What Kahn seems to be doing is compiling as many assets as he can and hoping one or two of them turns out to be a real star.  Considering that Kahn is a businessman, I suppose this strategy must seem like the best way to him.

I don't know how well it's really going to work out.  As Nick pointed out, it has the unfortunate result of severely devaluing the assets that don't workout because they never get playing time to prove their worth.

However, the team Kahn is putting together doesn't look outright terrible.  It's got plenty of depth, and a good deal of potential at each position.  The strategy actually reminds me a lot of what Pritchard did with the Trailblazers (getting a lot of young assets at each position), only the Wolves lack stars.

I suppose you can't really blame Kahn for that.  If one of his assets turns out to be a Brandon Roy, I doubt there will be so much knashing of teeth regarding what Kahn has done with the Wolves.

Minnesota's starting 5 is... horrid. Not having a single guy who makes more than $10 million is typically not an indication of good management, it's an indication you don't have a go-to player.

Is that really Kahn's fault, though?  The Wolves tried to build around Big Al but it didn't really work out for them.  They haven't had any other players who could be a "go-to guy" since KG left.

I think Kahn is just doing what he can to try to end up with a "go to guy" simply by acquiring a lot of young players and hoping enough of them develop that he can either build around them or trade them for a star or two he can actually build around.  It's a perfectly understandable strategy even if it isn't a perfect one.

I just think you can't blame Kahn entirely for the situation the Wolves are in...it was a crappy situation before Kahn got there.  In the NBA, you really have to get lucky in order to get better.  The Wolves haven't gotten lucky yet.

Passing on DeMarcus Cousins looks a very bad decision now.

No point in doing that if you're going to discard Big Al like that.
