Even though I hate the yankees, he was a great owner who would do anything to win, can't ask for much more than that out of a owner.

No matter how much I hate the Yankees, you have to give the guy respect for what he was able to accomplish there.

RIP

reminds me of the scene in the sopranos when livia dies and the whole room struggles to say anything nice about her because there was nothing redeeming about her.

Nice things to say....

Um, he was nowhere near the worst sports figure to host Saturday Night Live.

He made sports more interesting. I think we need more characters like him. Not too many more, though.

He was certainly sui generis. Respect.

Classy. Show some respect.

RIP George.  There was no better owner than you.

RIP Steinbrenner

I always hated him, but respected him. He truly was a great owner.

He effected my life by adding to a great rivalry and by being an excellent character on my favorite show. (Even if it was not him)

Even though I always thought of him as a bumbling idiot who hit the panic button every year with some clichéd tirade when he was more involved with the team, he was a winner.  From the very beggining by buying the Yanks for a very modest $10 million (now they're $1.5 billion), winning championships by spending (although it p---ed the hell out of me) what he needed in order to put a winning product on the field (not to say there weren't lean years too).  As a fan (even for the Red Sox) I can admire what he was able to do for his fan base.

RIP George.  Hope there's baseball in heaven.

GO Red Sox!

I don't think they could call it Heaven if there wasn't.   ;)

Great owner.  Always did everything he could to win.

RIP.

Tremendous adversary of Red Sox fans and a man that could never be accused of not wanting to win, not loving his team, and not loving the game.

I may hate the Yankees and resent what George did to make life as a Red Sox fan miserable, but I respect and admire his competitive spirit and the love and dedication and compassion he had for his team.

Rest in peace George. You were one of a kind and will surely be missed. Hating the Yankees will just never be the same again.

He provided the face for the greatest nemesis to Boston Baseball for 40 some-odd years.  His unrelenting desire to have his team be the best and win it every year gave energy to the whole rivalry and that rivalry made the whole sport more fun to watch.  I'd say he deserves some respect for that.

RIP George.
