Matt Barnes is one of those guys who got slated as "defenders" just because they really have no NBA-caliber skills offensively. The fact is, most of those guys, Barnes included, are not good defenders.

Barnes, in particular, is an erratic three-point shooter, too slow to play SF, too short to play PF, and his only redeeming quality is that he will unceremoniously rough-up opposing players.

I felt much better about Boston's chances against Orlando when he was on the floor.
Agreed on all counts

BARNES SUCKS

He is certainly overrated.  He was certainly not that good against the Celtics in the playoffs.

By that standard, the only players Ainge should try and sign are Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol.

Let's be serious.  Barnes is AT LEAST as good as TA.

Mike

No, he wasn't.

TA played good defense against the likes of Bryant and Wade.

Barnes allowed Pierce to go off.  (where as Lebron and Artest really slowed him down)

Yes, Matt Barnes is not as good a defender as LeBron or Artest or even TA.  Though since he played less than 24 minutes a game in the Eastern conference finals, you can't exactly blame him for all of Pierce's success.

Playoff stats

Tony Allen - 16.3 minutes, 48% shooting, 0% from three, 5.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, .7 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover.

Matt Barnes - 23.3 minutes, 40% shooting, 37% from three, 6.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, .7 steals, .7 turnovers.

So, Barnes is a MUCH better shooter, MUCH better rebounder and MUCH less likely to commit a turnover than Tony.

I seem to recall another thread where you said replacing TA would be easy, so there was no need to give him that 3rd year.  Well, what replacement for TA would be better than Barnes?

Mike

I think that when Tony (or Barnes) are paired up against very good offensive players, what they do to limit the effectiveness of their opponents is much more important than how many points they score or how well they shoot.

That said, Matt Barnes is one of the finest rebounding small forwards in the NBA today. Excellent rebounder.

A liability defensively and streaky offensively though.

Beyond the debate about what kind of acquisition he would be, I remember pretty vividly that Matt Barnes didn't want to play in a cold weather when he signed with Orlando.  That probably hasn't changed since then.

Barnes has on attribute that'd help the C's, he's an excellent rebounder.

Other than that, yuck.

Not to be a jerk but, I'm not sure where this misnomer got started but, Matt Barnes isn't and never was a even a good rebounder.

2010 Playoff Stats

Paul Pierce - 6 rebounds in nearly 39 minutes a game.
Matt Barnes - Almost 5 rebounds in just over 23 minutes a game.

Matt Barnes pulled down 5.5 rebounds in only 25.9 minutes a game last season. That is an average of 7.6 rebounds per 36 minutes which is in line (slightly higher) with his career average (7.4).

Only one other small forward rebounded a better rate per minute last season and that was Gerald Wallace. Barnes out-rebounded every other small forward in the NBA.

Matt Barnes is an outstanding rebounder for a small forward.

The CBSsports.com player rankings for this past season put Barnes at #25, better than Shane Battier, Mike Miller, Tayshaun Price, Antoine Wright and Jamario Moon.  I'm not entirely sure I buy those rankings, but the idea that Barnes is some garbage scrub is ridiculous.
And those rankings are based on fantasy league offensive stats alone. Barnes is mediocre offensively and mediocre, maybe worse, defensively. He is not a garbage scrub, but he isn't all that good either.

The C's need a good backup wing, not Matt Barnes. Frankly, I've decided Danny isn't going to get one, though. I think he is going to whiff with Sheed's contract.

Basketball Prospectus has Barnes listed as essentially the 5th best small forward free agent on the market.

I wouldn't be interested in getting Barnes at all... he's not even good he's just passable and lucky to have played on some good teams to get more well known and thus get a thread like this.

I'm not even going to look up his stats because every game I've seen him play in he's done little to impress me and a lot more to do otherwise.

As Who and Mbunge stated Matt Barnes pulls down a huge number of rebounds for a SF in limited minutes.

Well, the idea that Barnes is better than Mike Miller, Prince, or even Shane Battier is equally ridiculous. I can see though how he can be preferable in a field where the other options areAnthony Morrow, Rudy Fernandes, or Adam Morisson.

  • You say when......
Well, Barnes is pretty good..besides, after losing TA, you need a young defender.....another player who may respond well playing with what is left of this team.......but the Celts better get patching this up quickly...no team will be showing us mercy.....! I hope they are in the gym working on the body....the legs....!!!

I'd certainly think Miller would be better than Barnes, but can anyone explain why his scoring has declined so much while playing on awful teams the last two seasons?  His shooting percentage didn't drop, but he's only averaged around 10 points a game for the Twolves and Wiz.
