A #Celtics team source tells @SportsCenter5 that Rasheed Wallace has made his retirement official - frees up his contract for a trade

Does freeing up his contract mean we can't trade it?

Please don't tell me this means that we can't trade him.

Because I thought that he would retire once he gets traded.

I hope this means the Celtics have a trade in place and are now going through the motions of using his contract.

Jw what do you mean by going through the motions of using his contract?

I mean whatever process is done when trading a contract that is retiring so the other team is off the hook for the next two years.

I have no clue what that may or may not be.

This makes no sense.  If he makes it "official" by filing the papers, he can't be traded.  My guess is they are just confirming that Sheed has confirmed that he WILL retire, making it clear to any team that trades for him.

I take it that means that he is definitely not returning and must not be looking for a buyout.

If he formally sent in the paperwork, then the Celtics can't do anything now.

This is a turning into an epically strange offseason for the NBA.

Sounds like other teams were worried that he might change his mind and play again. This is good news.

Right. The people/person reporting on the situation clearly don't have an understanding of how this process works...

It wouldn't be good for us if he filed the papers with the league already because the only options after that would be vet min guys and trades....this roster simply has to get more talented using Sheed's instant expiring contract.

Well I  still hope there is a way we can trade Sheeds contract, get something useful out of it, and that he can come back and play with us for the second half of the season.

If he files he can't play at all next season.

That is not happening.  Its one or the other.  Either he sticks around and collects his money, or he gets traded and retires.  There is no way he is going to get traded, and walk away from $12 million guaranteed, just to come back to the C's to play for the minimum.

wherever sheed gets traded to could he just accept a 1 dollar buyout to keep the option or him returning at the end of the season if he changed his mind??
