Relax for a minute. I can't believe that Danny would let TA walk for that deal UNLESS he already has a deal in place that nets TA's replacement. Maybe Sheeds deal for a package that cannot be announced yet?

I just don't believe that DA resigned RAY, Resigned PP and then used the full MLE on JO if winning a Championship was not the top priority.

In order to do that, we have to have another wing, a big and back-up PG. Nate will fill the PG role.

Have some faith in Danny. We don't know what is going on behind the scenes. JO wasn't even mentioned int he media until the deal was basically done.

So just chill and lets see what DA has going on.

The Boston Celtics had had a pretty solid summer retaining some of their key components from last season's Finals team, but they lost one of their top reserves Sunday when guard Tony Allen agreed to a three-year, $9.7 million offer from the Memphis Grizzlies, a league source confirmed.

Allen was a key during Boston's run to the Finals, guarding the likes of LeBron James, Vince Carter and Kobe Bryant with next to no help during several stretches of play, and providing unexpected offense on occasion for the Celtics. Allen and Glen Davis were instrumental in Boston's Game 4 win over the Lakers in the Finals that tied the series at two games apiece. He shot 51 percent from the floor for Boston, averaging 6.7 points per game, and had shown increased maturity and consistency this season.

The Celtics wanted to re-sign Allen, but were unwilling to give him a third guaranteed year. The most Boston offered was a two-year, $5.2 million offer, with a partial guaranteed third year. At that point the 28-year-old Allen decided to entertain the Memphis offer, which has no partial guarantees or team options. The Grizzlies like the toughness that Allen is expected to bring to Memphis as a reserve behind guard O.J. Mayo and small forward Rudy Gay, who agreed to an $82 million deal earlier this month.

At least before we could think Danny had a "masterplan" but it just looks like he lowballed TA... doesn't look good for a potential replacement with our limited finances.

Danny is really holding fast to his 2012 rule, save for the Pierce contract (and that may have been more Wyc than Ainge).

I think Carmelo and D12(probably other big names) are up for new contracts in 2012. Plus it's just smart in general to have caps space if your a team without direction as we will most likely be in 2012. We don't want to have money tie up in role players when we're without stars.

Although TA had probably his best year with the C's this year and did a nice job defensively at times on Kobe, he was once again more miss than hit. He has one of the worst shots at the 2 spot in the entire league. He poses no offensive threat from the outside. He was still turnover prone and at times just a body out there. He also is hurt as much as he is healthy.  Overpaying for TA is not a smart GM move.

Let's not forget that before his surgery Daniels was playing at a very high level and had he not gone down TA never would have gotten those minutes. I am not saying Daniels is the right answer either, but that 3 mil + per year can give us better bang for our buck elsewhere. DA must really like this Bradley kid and think we will get either Nate or House back. Getting one of them and looking for a bit bigger defender makes sense.

IMO, it is kind of bad that Tony doesn't have enough faith in his abilities that he woudl leave for only an incremental 3rd year.  Hope he enjoys the mediocrity of Memphis.

I don't know. For a guy with his injury history and off court problems, he's lucky to get a 3 year/10 million deal. I don't blame him at all for taking the most that he could get and maximizing on a good playoff showing.

Dwight Howard will be a free agent. Carmelo is a free agent in 2011. Other than D12, there really aren't any players to build a team around in 2012. Besides, no big free agents, in their prime, have ever came to play basketball in Boston for the Celtics. Free agency is fools gold. Don't be fooled by the Heat. That will never work for the C's.

Memphis is the team that gave away Pau Gasol to the Lakers. The Lakers were one of the teams interested in Tony. Image if Memphis trades him to LA - they may want the defensive help against Miami.

I don't think he was ever comfortable and judging from the wrap on his thumb, it was never completely healed.

I could be very wrong about this but wasn't Daniels against returning to the C's based on how little he played this year?  Personally I'm not sold that Daniels is the answer due to his health issues.  When he did get on the court he usually showed he had some ballhandling skills.  His offense was usually rusty but he could still finish around the rim.  not sure what rights we have to him if Danny were to pursue him

exactly.  No idea why the Celtics don't sign him for that amount.  He is well worth it as the defensive wing off the bench. 

He's worth it because he's worth, but he's also worth it because we have no other ways to sign player remotely comparable.

Some of my optimism this off season was due to the fact that we had key reserves as our own free agents (TA and Nate) which meant that we didn't have to use the MLE to fill their roles.

I'm honestly shocked that 3 mil was too much for TA. He'd be worth that even if we had other ways to sign players.

I guess we have to see the final product before we complain, but this one is a head scratcher for sure. Just like Leon last year....
