I don't know if they would go for it, but the numbers match up

Sheed's expiring contract for Rasual Butler and Travis Outlaw.

We get two long, athletic perimeter guys, and Outlaw can give some minutes at the 4 and Butler can swing between 2 and 3.

Thoughts?

I don't see them doing this unless they are looking to free up some money.

But if it does happen....it'd be a steal.

Aren't both these guys free agents? If they want to free up money they will just let them walk.

Butler and Outlaw are Free Agents...can you even sign 2 guys on one team for a sign and trade?

And I was thinking maybe we'd have to give up Sheed and a 1st rounder for Outlaw or else there is no advantage for the Clips to doing it.

I think they are both FA. Clipper has no starting SF. Good chance they keep 1 of those guys, if not both.

According to Yahoo Sports, NJ Nets have targeted Outlaw as an UFA, along with Tyrus Thomas and Kyle Korver.

This type of idea might be the best way to use Rasheed's contract.

Not sure if LAC would do this exact deal. I imagine they have some interest in holding onto one or both players now that they have missed out on all the top names in free agency.

But something like this, seems like a good plan.

Any past precedent of a sign and trade for an expiring contract before?

2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

This is not quite an expiring contract. There would be no cap or financial hit here. The Sheed contract would immediately come off their books. Not in 12 months time. A very different situation.

This trade would be more similar to a team signing and trading their player to a team below the cap in order to help their player get a larger payday.

Some teams are willing to do that freely. Other teams require an incentive.

So, there would be a couple of other factors which would decide whether the Celtics need to add a further incentive or not (say a bag full of cash, a pair of second round picks, or perhaps up to a future first round pick) ... that will depend on the specific situation. The players involved, the teams and their GM's modus operandi. Whether the organization wants to keep their players.
