I agree (Who) that Mike Miller is the best value at the midlevel for our team. Problem is, we will likely have to spend it on a player(s) below his talent level because that is what the market offers. I think he may end up getting more than the MLE from someone like the Clippers.

Of the bigs you added (thanx), didnt Etan Thomas have heart surgery?

We will have to live with a few less than 'perfect' bigs as backups for awhile it seems. Just not a lot available. That is why I suggest a couple to use as a 'by committee' approach.

Yeah, I think it's best to scratch Etan Thomas off the list.

I remember him playing fairly well, or at least well above my low expectations, near the start of last season for the Thunder ... solid defensively but poor offense/rebounding ... but he would still only be my fourth preference out of those four players listed as possibilities for the third string big man. Better to go with Foyle, Ratliff or Marks.

As I look at Thomas rebounding numbers + offensive efficiency ... I was remembering him better than he was. Best to scratch him off the list.

Another interesting name is Johan Petro. Very good rebounder. Good size and athleticism. Decent offensive game. Weak on defense though (why he doesn't play much). A good fifth or sixth big man but not a regular rotation player.

I'd love Haywood, Dampier would be nice too.  For a cheap salary the guy I would love to go to war with the Celts in the playoffs is Kurt Thomas.  Every year he looks washed up and doesn't get much regular season pt, but in every playoffs the guy competes and makes things happen.  I really like him.

Petro is a nice athletic big with some offensive skills who would fit best on a young running team. He has that 'European' avoid contact in the post, big man mentality. Maybe KG and Perk could get him fired up. He needs a warrior mentality but has more of a dancers approach.

Kurt Thomas is a guy I have long coveted to be a Celtic. I wouldnt mind starting him until Perk got back even though he probably isnt the best guy for the role. I think Nesterovich is of who we have discussed so far, unless Kwame Brown has a mental resurgence.

I like Kurt Thomas too.  He is a savvy defender.  You don't think he can but he can contribute.

I'd rather spend the MLE on Mike Miller, then get two aging bigs to hold down the fort until Perk gets back.  One he does get back, we'll really only need one of those two vets to be a contributor, and then likely only 10-15 mpg given the minutes BBD is likely to earn.  Then the other big becomes our new Shelden Williams.

Who those bigs are would really come down to who can either be had for Rasheed or at the minimum.

Matt Bonner.

Matt Bonner could be added to the PF list but it seems likely to me that he would resign with San Antonio. Is he really better than Scalabrine?

Dampier will eventually join the list and he is very close skill-wise to Perkins. The problem is that he usually only shows promise during contract years.
Dampier is one of those guys that appears to only give consistent effort in contract years ala Mark Blount. I much prefer a lower skilled guy that gives consistent effort.

Bonner has good size (6'10"), sets solid (legal) picks, and can shoot lights-out from 3.  Good positional/team defender, good hustle guy.  Can play minutes without screwing up.  He plays a different position than Scal, but there are some similarities.  With the premium being paid for size, he might be a rational alternative to overpaying.  I think he likes San Antonio, but is from Concord, NH and grew up loving the C's.  I think he'd take even money to come back, and I don't think San Antonio is going to give him that much money.

Dampier:  No defense whatsoever.  Mrs. Banners and I sat behind the hoop for the C's game in Dallas-every fan was badmouthing Dampier for missed rotations and general confusion.  No thanks.

  • You say when......
bonner is wayyyy better than scal...the only reason he gets compared is they look similiar......it is like good scal/bad scal...we had bad scal......bonner is more of an nba player, scal is a novelty, good for a team that can afford to be careless....we cannot...! I bet bonner would sign for the 3.5 mill scal used to get..if he is from NH no way he is happy in SA...you ever live there...i did.....Texas in NOT NE......the only comparable city there is Austin...Dallas is a big monet Texas town though....(city). But SA....talk about dirty Water...LOL....
