???  Is Ainge really stupid enough to guarantee him a 4th year, overpay an aging player, and screw up our best shot at rebuilding with one of the best PGs in the league and a SG with great potential?

have you seen what other free agents are getting? The Pierce deal is a great deal for the celtics in comparison. I'm glad it worked out. By the way, who's the "SG with great potential" that your talking about?

Meh, I'm not happy about it, but there was no way around it in this spending climate.

Some other team would have offered him 4 years $75 million or something.

Yeah, this delays rebuilding a year. But what the heck, the celtics may actually be able to rebuild in the next three years and have pierce come off the bench in year four. And maybe hell will be a comfortable place for penguins too.

Inany case, if this is what it takes for the celtics to have at least one more run at #18 it is fine with me.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Avery Bradley. And don't even say that he's a point guard.

Danny did as well as could be expected with this contract once he made the initial decision to re-sign Pierce.

I hope so , but that's a long stretch, and Pierce is a SF.

Pretty much I was hoping they could get a partially guaranteed fourth year.

Still I'm happy that Pierce will be a Celtic next year.

More flexibility short term in order to have a chance to compete for a title. They'll pay the price down the road.  I'm not so much against giving a guy like Pierce 4 years, but by the end of his contract he'll be a jump shooter who can't guard superstars one on one.

On the other hand, Pierce had very real leverage I think to go elsewhere and leave the C's high and dry.  Someone would have given him a lot more than 61 million and a 4 year package.

So while not a great deal, I think it's passable.  Both sides kind of got what they wanted, but at a price for the C's that will eventually come due.

Dirk could have gotten 90+ million and "settled" for 80 from Dallas.

If you don't ask Paul Pierce to share the ball with 2 other hall of famers and an All-Star point guard....and you don't ask Paul to use up half his energies on defense...you can get 25 PPG from Paul, just like how Dallas is getting that from Dirk.

I prefer to get better defense out of Paul and maximizing our team's strength with sharing the ball.

I'm just happy that Pierce stays with the C's and Dirk stays with the Mavs.

:D

now the fun really begins in terms of free agency......

In this context, it's not a bad deal.  Dirk & PP I believe are the same age.  But Dallas has even less of a chance than this team of winning a title.
