More flexibility short term in order to have a chance to compete for a title. They'll pay the price down the road. I'm not so much against giving a guy like Pierce 4 years, but by the end of his contract he'll be a jump shooter who can't guard superstars one on one.
On the other hand, Pierce had very real leverage I think to go elsewhere and leave the C's high and dry. Someone would have given him a lot more than 61 million and a 4 year package.
So while not a great deal, I think it's passable. Both sides kind of got what they wanted, but at a price for the C's that will eventually come due.
