Deal is for 4 years at about 80 million.

Can't say I'm surprised by this.  I was secretly hoping he'd go elsewhere and team with another star.  It'd be fun to see and be sweet to see Mark Cuban panic.

I actually like Mark Cuban. He's not afraid to go in his pockets to build a quality team and just seems passionate. They have a few tradeable pieces too (Butler, they could S&T Haywood) so I wouldn't be surprised to see them pull of a sign and trade for a FA. Maybe not one of the big 3, but I could see them getting someone.

Glad Dirk is heading back to Dallas, it would've been odd to see him elsewhere.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

I know it's kinda dull but on this one I'm with you (and Stern). I like seeing guys on the same team for long periods of time.

I'm glad, Dirk wouldn't look right anywhere else.

I'll be very interested to see if they can turn Dampier's non-guaranteed contract into an impact player.

I'm glad Dirk stayed put...  And if I understand correctly, he even left around $11 million dollars (roughly) on the table in this deal.

I think this also puts some pressure on the Celtics regarding Pierce's deal...  Dirk got 4 guaranteed years at $20 mill. per.  I'm guessing Paul knows that...as does Wyc.

The figures were ... Dallas offered Dirk $96 million while Dirk signed for $80 million.

Dirk left $16 million, $4 million per annum, on the table.

Why did he do that?  Makes no sense.

What is disloyal about accepting $96M?  It's not like this was Dirk's demand and he came down out of "loyalty".  This is what Cuban offered.  Something missing.

Dirk did it with the agreement that Cuban would spend the money on acquiring a true second option to play alongside him.

So that Dirk would get to finish his career playing for a contender rather than an aging playoff squad with no hope for a title.

Dirk did to ensure Cuban paid for another star to ensure Dallas would have a chance to win to ensure Dirk would enjoy the end of his career + get to stay in Dallas while hunting for his Championship.

Makes sense.  So he basically told his owner and GM how to run the off-season.  Love it.  Cuban is a complete idiot and probably needed that, but Donnie Nelson should know better.

This is all pure speculation (even my comment regarding loyalty)...  The only person who knows why he did this is Dirk, and he owes none of us an explanation.

But I'd like to think he did it because he values the Mav's organization and that he wants ownership to be able to use some funds to bring in better players alongside him.
