If he is better than Patrick O'Bryant I'll be happy.

Any chance Danny inked him just so he had a low dollar contract and a young big as a chip to include in a deal this summer or one he may be working on right now?

I'm probably reaching... but just trying to figure out how this makes sense.

anyone looks good in highlight packages. I could make a video package of Scal highlights and you'd think he was an all-star.

just saying, don't take it too seriously. But that would be great for us if you're right.

You're crazy.  Take a look at this highlight.  That's all you need to see. Guy's a future All-star!  ;)

Amazing!  This guy is clearly a building block for the future.  We'll build around Rondo and Him.  Is it too early to start the "Why won't Doc won't play Erden" thread?

Seriously, though, I'm not sure Perk can do what's in that clip.  Perk would've held the ball until the help came, then tried a slo-mo power move, then gotten a T after the play for complaining he was fouled.

I heard from a friend in Turkey that he has a lot of upside.  What he needs to improve is consistency.  Also, he needs to go to the gym more to bulk up like Dwight Hawards.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
Danny likes the guy's potential, and it's doubtful that he's going to let a couple games in summer league change his mind one way or the other.

Erden is going to be making around $450k.  This is a no cost move.  Erden probably won't pan out, but regardless, I see no problem having him on the roster, now or later.

It is always good to have one tall guy around to practice against. Otherwise everyone has a tendency to flatten their shots and it always takes a little while to get used to the long arms of the tall guys. It always irritates me when I let a tall guy block my shot because I hadn't made the simple adjustment. That is why teams facing Kareem in college used to have a guy with tennis rackets take his place in the defense.

A lot of the NBA is about matchups. Most of the time you don't need the tall guy but sometimes you do. Scalabrine was really useful now and then over the years for that reason. It remains to be seen if this guy has enough talent for a now and then role.

ha, he would have to be dead to not be better.

Shoulda waited till after the summer league. If one of the other two talked about centers out play him, it won't look good.

Definitely not an intelligent move. It doesn't seem Danny to pull the trigger like this, without comparing the guy with some competition. I still think Art or even Kravtsov will look better than this guy. Let's hope the source isn't reliable.

On the other hand, without a contract in hand, perhaps Erden wouldn't have played as well in SL, worried about injuring himself, thereby hurting his chances at signing a contract with the Cs or an overseas club.

Low risk move by Danny.  He can still sign Art or Kravtsov.
Celtics fan for life.

Nice exaggeration...I've seen Perk do that hundreds of times, just with two hands instead of one.

If he was a future all-star he'd have dunked it with his left hand.

No kidding. Even if it is just to fill out the roster, I doubt people will necessarily care about what he does in summer league unless he totally blows everyone away, in which case he was worth the signing anyways.

I agree it seems strange to sign him right now.  I do think we're gonna see Ainge giving out those minimum contracts (about $500K) to fill out the roster, but why not wait until the bigger pieces are in place?
Because Ainge wants him to play in summer league and likes him enough to not risk playing hardball and losing his exclusive rights.
