I'm very happy with this deal.  I'm interested to see how it's structured (i.e., does it increase, decrease, or stay level over time).

According to the Herald, it's 4/61 and he'll make significantly less than the 21.5M he was scheduled to make.

Yeah, what I'm interested in is the first and last year salary.

In a "typical" deal, his salaries would be:

2010-11: $13,174,946
2011-12: $14,558,315
2012-13: $15,941,684
2013-14: $17,325,053

That deal includes yearly raises of 10.5% of the first year value of the contract.

Inversely, the deal could go down over time:

2010-11: $17,325,053
2011-12: $15,941,684
2012-13: $14,558,315
2013-14: $13,174,946

Or, the team could agree to a relatively level contract over time, such as:

2010-11: $15,250,000
2011-12: $15,250,000
2012-13: $15,250,000
2013-14: $15,250,000

It doesn't make a huge difference; I'm just curious.  My bet would be on option #1.

While I admit you are the cap expert on this site Roy, I think your math on option 2 is a little off.  By the way, i like option 2 best.  I expect Paul's deal to break down as such:

1st year: 18mil
2nd year: 16.11mil
3rd year: 14.22mil
4th year: 12.33mil
Total: 60.66 mil

According to the CBA, maximum player raises or decrease for a veteran qualifying free agent (Bird FA), are 10.5%.

Either way, you numbers or mine, I hope this is the structure of the contract.  If so, we will only have approx. 25mil tied up (Pierce and Rondo) for the 2012 offseason.  Based on current cap numbers, which coyld completely change with the new CBA, we could easily be 30mil under the cap.  Sure, we would only have 2 players, but with one big FA signing, we could become a legit contender right away.

I like these numbers and the idea that we can go for a big FA signing in 2012. Who might be available then though, Dwight Howard? It looks like Melo and Durant will sign extensions. If so, who else does that leave? I'd be glad with Howard, but I was really hoping for Durant. Also, hopefully Howard matures mentally a little more by then.

$61/4 is fair market value for both sides. Nicely done. I hope the deal gets lower over time, and I'm curious about the 4th year conditions.

Lets get Ray, trade Sheed's contract and sign a couple more bodies and go get the 2011 championship.

Go Celtics!!

agreed. spelling errors on an internet blog a very common and not indicative of disrespect. Your issues with your graduate advisor should not be generalized to everyone in this country either.
No, my encounter with my graduate adviser is just a representative example. As far as disrespect goes, I guess it's a free country, and everyone is free to put themselves up for scrutiny as they wish, including Internet blogs. Everyone is free to interpret it as they wish. I find it a sign of respect, especially having in mind that _precisely_ because it's the Internet, and it takes about 15 seconds to check.

As far as the "spelling mistakes happen when you type quickly", that's clearly not the case when it happens 4 times in a fairly long paragraph of text.

Just because something is common doesn't make it acceptable. But I guess it's just me.

That is all.

I find myself combing through your posts looking for spelling or grammatical errors. I thought I found one, but no such luck.

If I were Pierce, I would look to have the money go down from year 1 to year 2, back up in year 3, then back down again in year 4.  That would be because I would want to minimize the salary that might be lost due to a lockout.  If the sticking point in negotiations is over a partially guaranteed fourth year, then I would be willing to accept a declining contract that is frontloaded if more money is guaranteed in the last year.

That's if I were Pierce.  He has already agreed to what I consider to be a below-market dollar figure, so I think the team should be willing to make a few concessions on salary structure.

Small point, but not knowing how to spell the name of players (foreign or not) isn't necessarily a "typing quickly" error. I frequently have to either cut and paste these names from other posts or look them up somewhere to get the spelling correct. That's a fairly onerous burden to place on posters when, while he misspelled the name, everyone knew exactly who he meant. I generally don't get excited about spelling until I start seeing the same thing misspelled multiple times by multiple people in the same thread.

Is it respectful to ignore a moderator?

Asking nicely apparently to get on topic is secondary to last-word-itis, get back to talking about Paul's contract.

Also be cautious when pointing out spelling or grammatical errors; there is usually no need for this, and such corrections often serve to heighten tensions between posters.

Pierce is a man of his word, he is the Truth! He said he wants to win and to retire a celtic, and his actions reflect it. Anyone who believed he would go to a team like the clippers for more $$ doesn't know Pierce. I'll be proud to see his number go up to the rafters in a few years.

Yay. PP stays green. Doc is back. Pierce is back. Let's keep the reunion train rolling Danny.

Excellent!  I really don't care what the numbers are.
Oh Reginald.  I disagree!  I'm very happy he'll make less. Now maybe we can add something better

The Celtics are following my vision of the future. Needless to say, I am encouraged. Doc's staying, Pierce is staying, next have the Allen brothers stay.

Trade Sheed for some big man help.

Extend Davis and Perkins for Amir Johnson money.

Sign a Midlevel.

Sign a LLE.

Sign Scalabrine for 2 million.  ;D

Sign a LLE.

No LLE this year.  It's a bi-annual exception (we get it every two years) and we invested it in Marquis Daniels last year.

I haven't read the entire thread, but has the 4th year option been confirmed?  Where did the mutual options thing come from?

Bleh - OK retain Scalabrine due to Larry Bird rights - We need as much big man help as we can get and they are very expensive - 20 million over 4 years for Darko Milicic - are you serious??
