Great deal for the Celtics ownership who should be praised for keeping their heads and being prudent with their money when so many other owners aren't.
I really don't care what the 4th year of the contract is for because Pierce will be retiring at the end of the 2012-2013 season. The Celtics will be rebuilding and the will probably kind of stick in 2012-13. Pierce will do his farewell tour that year, have a gigantic send off and then retire taking none of the last year. I'm convinced of that. He is just not going to want to be playing in a rebuilding situation. I don't see it.
Also, have to commend Pierce for doing the right thing as, without a no trade clause, he sets himself up as a valuable trading commodity as his contract won't be that bad but his talent will be undeniable. Yes I understand that the understanding is he stay here until the end but, without that clause, management could send him out of town if things go badly and they feel it's time to start over.
