According to a source close to the Celtics, Pierce's new contract is a 4-year, $61 million deal.

I suck at maths, so how much dollars will Pierce get per year approximately with 61$ million over four years?

Just reported:  4 years/ $61 million.  I guess that means 3 years guaranteed at about $15 mill/year.

Wonderful news all around.
Welcome back Paul Pierce!
Nice job Danny + Wyc!
I think it is important to have a franchise with players who stay with the franchise from draft through until retirement.  Especially important for a franchise like the Celtics which has such a rich history.
Celtics fan for life.

that's the average - I wonder if it is increasing or decreasing over the term of the deal

Thanks for the information!

I like that number, it seems really fair for both sides to me. Hopefully the deal is frontloaded for the first two years and then it goes to a lower figure to maintain ou flexibility.

It will be interesting to see how much the Celtics will offer Ray, knowing that he is much older than Pierce... but could get a lot of more attractive offers.

If this is true, I think he took a substantial discount to re-sign here.  Have to think he could have gotten more from a desperate team with cap space -- and there are going to be more than a couple based on the reports that some of these FA's are staying with their old teams.

I'm sorry, but 4 guaranteed years is not good. I'm excited to have Pierce back, but we're going to be paying Pierce 15 million dollars when he is 36 years old.

Well, the original report indicated that only the first three years were FULLY guaranteed.  Would make sense that the forth year might have some kind of buyout - i.e., there is SOME guaranteed money in year four, but not the full ~$15M.

Pierce, Celtics reach agreement
Paul Pierce will remain a Celtic.

The club has reached agreement with its captain on a new contract, according to sources. The deal is said to be for four years, with only the first three fully guaranteed.

The papers cannot be signed or officially announced until next week.

Pierce opted out of the final year of his previous contract and became an unrestricted free agent at 12:01 Thursday. But he took that route with the intention of re-signing with the Celtics in a deal that would help his own future and allow the club better maneuverability.

The numbers were not available, but Pierce will in the 2010-11 season make significantly less that the $21,513,521 he was scheduled to receive. That will aid the Celtics’ position versus the luxury tax.

Thanks Captain.  Now let's either get Ray signed or sign and trade him for someone that can help that isn't a big schlub and we'll be set.

Does that change how some of you feel now?

Like Pierce, but does this strap our flexibility trying to move forward?

Yeah, I'm hoping that only half or so that is guaranteed.
