Per Kevin Arnovitz:

"@kevinarnovitz R. Brewer walks unrestricted. Who needs a low-cost, defensively tough guard who can cover 3 positions and make smart reads? Not MEM."

I like Brewer a lot.  His main weakness is that he can't shoot 3's, but he's very athletic and racks up a lot of steals.  He played very well alongside a pass-first point guard in Utah - Deron Williams.  He can run the break.

The Celtics could do a lot worse than Ronnie Brewer, and they probably wouldn't have to use the whole MLE on him.

Didn't he tear up his ankle his first game with the Grizz? Only for the minimum would I take a chance like that right now.

So?  Perk destroyed his knee in the Finals and everybody around here seems to think he'll be right as rain come December.

Ronnie is young; I'm sure he'll be in good shape next season.  If he can be had for a low cost because of the injury, I say jump right on that.  He's an underrated player and probably will have a lower value on the market because of that injury.

Rondo and Brewer would be bad on offense together; neither has a consistent outside shot.

Hasn't Tony Allen proven that a non-shooting guard can work well alongside Rondo?

Brewer is like TA only younger, bigger, a better ball-hawk, and actually a better shooter (he can hit long 2's relatively well).

Rondo/Tony worked well together on most occasions, but their inability to shoot was one of the major reasons they weren't effective offensively against the Lakers.

Brewer is better offensively, but TA is better defensively (more lock-down, and better at stealing - he had the highest steal % in the league). He's a good option, but I would rather use the full MLE on an SG who can shoot and score (e.g. Mike Miller) and keep TA as the fourth wing so we have both offense and defense off the bench at the wing spots.

Even though I feel Brewer is a better player if you think he and tony are equals he has one thing Tony doesn't the extra inches.  If only TA was 6'6" or 7" instead of 6'4"

Much rather keep TA and save the MLE on someone else. TA is the better defender, Brewer a better offensive player - but overall not that much of a difference between the 2 players.

We only have the MLE and Sheed's contract at this point. (well maybe a S&T for Ray)

It all depends on if we can get a big by trading Sheed, that will free up our MLE a lot.

I like Brewer on the break as a finisher much more than TA but, his defense isn't as good as TAs but, you you are right about his offensive skills.  He's another horrible FT shooter though which Boston has enough of already.

Agreed. To many needs to make brewer over TA (whose bird rights we maintain) a priority right now. If things fall into place for size and shooting via sheed's deal and some of the MLE then i'd be thrilled to have brewer.

another guy i'd like to see the Cs sign on the cheap: amir johnson.

Wouldn't Ronnie Brewer just be Marquis Daniels version 2.0?

Seems to me like the same kind of player...  not worth the money, and he's a guy that might still be looking for work come september / october.

No thanks...

I think this is right on the money.
Brewer would be okay, but the Cs have much bigger needs (pun intended ;) ) at the moment.  The first focus should be on addressing those needs.

If, after addressing those needs, Brewer is still available, and willing to take the min (or whatever is left of the MLE), then fine.
Celtics fan for life.

  • 'Cause there ain't no fours!
I'm becoming more and more wary of this wing players who can't shoot.  I think Rondo is going to need knock-down shooters at his sides to be successful throughout his whole career.
