Quote
08 pm June 30, 2010, by Michael Cunningham When the Hawks meet with Joe Johnson in Los Angeles at the start of the free-agency negotiating period early tomorrow morning, they will offer him a six-year contract for the maximum amount allowed, according to people with knowledge of their plans The exact amount of maximum contracts won’t be determined until a league audit is completed over the next week, but it’s expected to total about $119 million for a player with Johnson’s experience. The other teams making pitches to Joe can only offer him five years at about $92 million. I still believe that the $27 million gap will be too much for Joe to turn down regardless of what other teams have to say about teaming up with LeBron or Bosh (or both), earning more in endorsements, or anything else not having to do with $27 million

That's crazy

Joe Johnsn is about a 12 mil per player in reality

This is the reality of every team with a ton of cap room to go after a big name having Joe Johnson as their fall back option.

So Joe Johnson basically quit on the Hawks during the playoffs, alienated the fan base, and now he is rewarded with a max contract? Wow... he would be fool not to accept but the Hawks are even dumber to offer him such a contract. Way overpaid and overrated.

Or the Hawks positioned themselves for a sign and trade.

Knicks will still have something to say about it.  I still believe Joe is going to go to the Knicks for the max.

Atlanta should not give Joe Johnson that sixth season. That should be a deal breaker.

Joe Johnson is fine value for a five year max contract.

+1

And I guess we are going to see a lot of players getting over paid once Bosh/Wade/Bron choose their teams.

yup, supposedly he was willing to go to NY for a little less money... so we'll see.

If I already had a good team, Joe Johnson would be on my dream list, but if I was building a team I would not build one around Joe Johnson.  He would be an excellent piece on a good team, not a franchise player, IMO... He is not a D. Wade, LB James, or, he hehe, Rajon Rondo but he sure would look good along side of any of them.

This is the problem with the NBA: too many teams handcuff themselves with a bunch of good, but not great players and become perpetually good, but never great.  At this point the Hawks might as well blow it up since it doesn't seem that this current team will ever be more than a 2nd round playoff team.

and I don't think the Hawks are.  I believe they are building around Horford and Smith.

He sure would've looked good next to Paul Pierce for the last 8 years...

I still can't believe he was traded for a brief rental of role players Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers.

If Joe wants to lock himself into 6 years of first and second round exits, that's his prerogative I guess.

If he's smart he'll go to NY, where he'll be overhyped and still quite overpayed.  At least he'll have more fun being mediocre there.

p.s. I think Joe Johnson will be washed up in 3-4 years.
