Let's make a few assumptions:

1. Perk will be back between ASB and playoffs in time to be the backup center for a playoff run.
2. Means we need a starting center
3. Gomes would get some run at both forward spots
4. If the C's don't bring back Ray Allen, they need a SG as biggest priority

Criteria for bringing back Gomes is then:

1. The C's can trade Sheed, Baby, TA, Nate and use MLE to fill starting center
2. Whatever is not used in (1) is used to replace Ray Allen

If the C's get that far and they have something like 50% of the MLE, you could see them signing Gomes (assuming he's down for that amount) - and probably assuming either TA or Nate made it through.

They'd also have to sign a third string center Vet Min to backup starter while Perkins rehabs and insurance in case he doesn't make it back.

So you'd have:

Start Center / Vet Min / Perk (when back)
KG / Gomes
Pierce / Gomes
Ray Allen (or Replacement) / Tony Allen or Nate / Pierce (big lineup)
Rondo / Tony or Nate / AB

The problem I have here is that Gomes has to be your 6th man - is he good enough for that? I don't think so. If they had another solid wing instead of TA or Nate behind Pierce and Allen to be 6th man, then I'd like it a lot better.

In response to what someone else said, I disagree, if I had to choose, Id take Mike Miller over Ryan Gomes, but Id still love to have him back

That's a no brainer, but for the Minimum why not?

Well if we'd be able to land Mike Miller, then IMO we'd be wasting a roster spot on Gomes.  Assuming Pierce is back, Miller would eat up all the back up SF minutes, Big Baby already has the role of undersized PF for small lineups.  The rest of the money would be better spent on a back up C or real PF

If we didnt land Miller, I would LOVE Gomes on this team, I'd have no problem at all.

In fact, I just tweeted him, telling him we miss him in Boston.  You guys should all do the same :)

We can't waste money on a tweener who can't solve our problems at center and can't be instant offense at the wing.

He's nice, but we already have an undersized power forward in Baby and if we want a 4th wing type, we can bring back TA without touching the MLE.

I think you're seriously underestimating Gomes' value on offense.  I think I'd rather have him than Mike Miller.  Of course, from seeing him in Minnesota and what I remember in Boston, Gomes' defensive IQ is absolutely atrocious.

Mike

I think your last phrase about Gomes's defensive IQ proves exactly why we wouldn't rather have him over Mike Miller.  We don't need him as a 4 since we have Baby.  We need him as a 3.  However, he's not a lockdown defender, nor is he a scorer.  Again, at the minimum, fine, but he's not really the solution to any of our problems.

He also doesn't address the need for depth at the 2.  If Ray Allen walks, Mike Miller is good enough to start.  If Ray Allen returns, he plays ~15MPG behind Ray and ~15MPG behind Pierce, letting both of those guys save their legs for the playoffs.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
Always like Gomes...  Gets the most out of his talent.  For the right price, I'd love to see him come back home.  The Celtics appear to have a number of decisions on the table which could take this team in any direction.  Gomes would be a nice fit either way, going for a title or starting over.

Bring him on for the minimum and let him prove he's worth resigning.

If Ray and Pierce sign on we could finalise our roster by resigning TA, snap up Ryan Gomes who never should have left us anyway, and in addition, MLE on Mike Miller. Then resign most of the guys from last year apart from Scalabrine unless he wants peanuts. This would be enough for Doc to come back with a new assistant who could have joint-duties along with Doc so Doc can have his break away from Basketball once in a while. Banner 18 already there!

Let’s go get him back.

Ryan Gomes on LLE, Mike Miller on MLE. Ray Allen and Pierce sign on for two years plus TA and Nate sign up too....

Does anyone know his Twitter account? I think it's time to flood his page with pleas from Celtics fans.
GotGomes.  Just tweeted him to come back to the C's.

Nicely done, sir. TP.

If it means dipping into the MLE I'm fine with it.

Did we use the bi-annual exception on Marquis?
