If Pierce opts out and wants big money, we will have a very long unproductive year next season. They won't resign Pierce to a contract that will hogtie them going forward.

So then if Pierce walks, Ray Allen walks, Doc walks, and KG stands around for a year yelling at stanchions all by his lonesome.

I just hope that Pierce and Allen stay...exactly as long as KG does.

Pierce should just look for an extension to his current contract. No need to opt out.

How bout Pierce opting out and signing for say,  5 mil a year 3 years.  It sounds crazy yes.  But what if Pierce plans on finishing his career in Boston, and wants to actually win a couple more?   He's now playing for posterity and I'd like to believe he knows that....

Opting out of 1 year $21 million contract and signing a 3 year $15 million dollar contract makes all the sense in the world for Paul.  ::)

HA, if Paul opts out and takes a longer contract instead... the total amount needs to atleast equal 21 million. He’s not gonna leave 21mil-1year for a 15mil-3years

He could opt out and take the minimum for a year, so we could sign a max level guy, and Wyc could hook him up with a 3 year 50mil contract the following year. Of course, there would have to be an under the table promise to Paul, regardless of injury and what have you.

Wow...the title for this forum topic is incredibly misleading.  You have 'will' in all caps and have 'speculation' in parenthesis which led me to believe that it was offical speculation through actual reporting...not just your speculation.

Sheesh.

Sheesh.

Not to get into a discussion of semantics, but this does touch on a pet peeve of mine.  Speculation is speculation.  Whether it is by a random poster on a forum, or by a well known pundit, or a GM who is not involved in the deal, it is still speculation.  The thing that separates "speculation" from "rumor" is inside information.

If it is speculation, there is no inside information, therefore, it does not matter who is speculating.  Obviously you can trust some people more than others, because you might think they have more valid opinions.  But it really doesn't matter.  Speculation is not a rumor.

I think this is something that is important to remember this time of year.  Just because an NBA writer is speculating something will happen, does not give it any more credence than any of us saying we think something will happen (assuming an equal level of logic and understanding of the rules is used of course).

He is the best player the Celtics had in 20 years, I am fine with overpaying him a bit. He will be a starter two years more (let´s say  25 million), a good back up the third year (let´s say 7.5 million) and I will give him a thanks-for-the-good-job year at 5 million.

So if they give him something like 35-37.5 million for 4 years and he retires as a Celtic legend (as he is)I would be happier than if he leaves Boston next year and retires somewhere else.

OK, thinking about this some more, I think it might make a lot of sense for Pierce to opt out, and sign a 2 year/$36 million deal, with the second year at a player option.

Now, this is going to ask him to give up the chance at really cashing in this summer, but I think he may consider that.  He has made plenty of money, and a deal like this would allow him to be a ring chaser in 2012 and beyond (which I think he would love), rather than being stuck on a lottery team with an untradable contract (which he would hate).

Money-wise, this deal would save the C's about $6 million this season, while costing Paul $3 million.  But Paul would likely make that up next season.  He wouldn't get the longterm money he wants, but he may be OK with that.

The player option also allows him to walk next summer in case things go south this year, and Danny decides to blow it up.

The biggest risk in this for Pierce is that there is a lockout in 2011, and he basically gave up $3 million for nothing.  But ultimately, he might take that chance.

I still think he is more likely to pick up his option for next season, but if he doesn't, I think this scenario could play out.

I think Pierce will want a contract longer than 2 years, especially considering his age and the likelihood of major changes to the next CBA.

I'd be shocked if he agreed to a new contract of fewer than 3 years, guaranteed or with player options.

If they do want to retain Pierce, they should just overload the heck out of 2 years so that he expires when KG does.

Really? I don't know, I don't think the 3rd year is going to be a deal-killer. Remember, Wyc loves Pierce. It's his money.

i know nothing about cap space and money etc but why is it that we struggle financially on keeping so and so or signing someone, yet the Lakers easily sign  and are paying top $$$ with there roster
