Rumor from Greece that Josh Childress could sign an offer sheet from the Washington Wizards at the start of free agency. Reportedly, the main point of negotiation remaining is whether the contract will be for four or five seasons. The Atlanta Hawks who again extended a qualifying offer to Childress this week retain the right to match.

Quote
The tragic conclusion of the Greek League finals might have been a bit too much for Chidlress, who is not used to such spectacles. Childress will be leaving Greece and Europe after 2 seasons and also leaving a 5.2 million euros contract behind. Effectively this move loosens up a bit the finances of Olympiakos and also it frees one foreign player spot. Childress averaged 15.2 points 4.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 20 games in the Euroleague and also 15.8 points 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 31 games in the Greek A1 league.

If true, it's a shrewd strategy on the Wizards part, forcing a luxury tax adverse Hawks franchise to decide on Childress before knowing Joe Johnson's intentions.

Why would Childress want to go to the Wizards of all teams?

You have to think he could go to a team with an actual chance at being competitive in the next 4 to 5 years.

Well, Andray Blatche's broken foot won't help matters. But Wizards should improve by leaps and bounds with the additions of Wall and Hinrich.

And reportedly Childress's decision to leave the Hawks for Olympiakos was partly about his dwindling role (also about strained negotiations and tension with unnamed teammates...).  He'd likely be a starter in Washington whether at the 3 or 4.

Childress went to Greece for bigger paycheck. Ron Artest is one of the few guys declining bigger paycheck for an opportunity to win. The premise of the story is

...but I'm convinced Chill could make just as much coin playing for a team with a somewhat better future.  I mean, of all the teams with major cap space this summer Chill looks to sign with one of the ones that aren't attractive to major free agents (and thus won't become substantially better this summer).

If so, Wizards are putting together some nice pieces.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

I hope so.  It looks like he has become a much stronger player while in Greece.  This stalemate with Atlanta needs to end.

The exchange range has now impacted Childress's contract.   That's why he is coming back.

This is true, and I'm not sure how many people realize what a huge difference this is. When Childress first started getting paid that 5.2 million was worth about 9 million dollars. With how bad the Euro has faltered, it is now down to about 6.2 million dollars per year. He probably always preferred the nba, but if he was going to get 3-4 million dollars a year in europe it became too good a financial offer. When the money is a lot closer to equal, the nba seems a lot better.

Just to throw it out there, would you trade Pierce, Allen, or KG for Arenas and McGee?

Obviously Arenas is a loose cannon, but he also is an elite talent.  That is the type of deal that can either kill the team for a couple years, or rejuvenate them.

I probably wouldn't do it, but I think it is at least an intriguing possibility.

Is he still an elite talent? He's IMO nowhere near the player he was before the injuries.
